I’m constantly keeping my ears open and eager to catch a note of the kinds of songs that reach deep into the chest and strum the heartstings like Desperado in an old tequila bar. Whether your head’s bobbin’, feet’s tappin’ or your fingers are taking percussion to the next level, you’re affected. If you know anything about the essence of musical make-up. then you understand. If you don’t, I don’t even know why you’re reading this.  Speaking of guitars, here’s one that did it to me the first time I heard it… Blu & Exile “Dancing In the Rain”

Big ups to Cambridge band Passion Pit for another skillfully crafted 3-minute earful of love.  Nevermind the fact that the video is an orchestra of objects spinning ’til the music runs out (think of the ballerina inside a musicbox) and skewed lights and obscurity, this song is insanely good. Better than good. It’s erie in a happy way, sad in a funny way, strange in a normal way and awkwardly relaxing in a hectic sort of way… you catch my drift? The mesh of child-like sing-a-long-song samples, synths, steady percussion and one pretty unique voice makes for a ray of light on a cloudy day with a 100 percent chance of feeling good. I particularly enjoy the visuals inside the cubes what with the mallets and clapping hands hiting every beat. Oh and Michael Anjelako’s mouth stills matching his vocals. Along with his beard. Very cool. This one definitely deserves a listen:

Basement Jaxx has done it again with their newest and one of their hottest tracks to date. It’s called Raindrops and it’s their first single from their upcoming album SCARS, scheduled for a September 21, 2009 release.  Since they hit the music scene in ’99 with Remedy (which is still one of my all-time favorite albums), I have followed them. I find myself anxious and waiting for the news that another album is on it’s way.  It’s like they’re pregnant and giving birth to these miracle tracks, individually crafted to light up the industry again.  Their colorful construct of tight, fluid melody and vivid physical imagery is enough to make your pupils dialate from the euphoria. Here’s to the Jaxx for bringing the heat and raising the bar!

I’m naked/I’m numb/I’m stupid/I’m staying/And if Cupid’s got a gun, then he’s shootin’
Lights black/Heads bang/You’re my drug/We live it/You’re drunk, you need it/Real love, I’ll give it

*So we’re bound to linger on/We drink the fatal drop/Then love until we bleed/Then fall apart in parts

You wasted your times/On my heart/You’ve burned/And if bridges gotta fall, then you’ll fall too/Doors slam/Lights black/You’re gone/Come back/Stay gone/Stay clean/I need you to need me

*So we’re bound to linger on/We drink the fatal drop/Then love until we bleed/Then fall apart in parts/Now we’re bound to linger on/We drink the fatal drop/Then love until we bleed/Then fall apart in parts

HIDE AND SEEK

I love Imogen Heap, especially this track. “Hide and Seek” is tightly constructed, smooth, liquid, experimental and evolves into a catchy, brilliant beat. The best part? It’s all vocal.  Check it out:

A favored underground hip hop group of mine, Living Legends,  butters this toasty track with a slow progression of piano, bass and percussion.  Rhymes are deep. Song is great for a day like today: cloudy and reflective with a soft focus over everything.

I don’t have much explanation for this song/video post of Sia’s “Breathe Me” other than it’s beautifully fitting.  I love the way the intensity of the song builds and builds until it fades itself out.

Why don’t you take a nice dip in this one: “Jump In the Pool”, courtesy of Friendly Fires. Their cool creative energy splashes in, over and throughout this festival-like tune, begging to be played and replayed.  Friendly Fires really does come with it in all of their tracks. I picked this one from the bunch of juicy goodness to share with you so you know what I mean. ciao.

What do you get when you mix Mighty Mos, Kweli and Common? A reason to breathe. Like wine, this song gets better with age. This has got to be one of my favorite Black Star feat. Common tracks. Honestly. It’s about THE CITY. The rawness. The problems. The ugly. The beauty. The reason to go but more importantly, the reason to stay.

Great song by the White Rabbits called “Percussion Gun”. Seriously. Percussion is heavy and leads the entire track throughout – hard, strong, assertive; demanding you listen to what the music has to say. It’s the kind of song that makes you shuttup and listen, to say the least. Once the guitar hits, though, your world will be rocked for good. Guaranteed you’ll either be swaying, head banging or air drumming. Hell, you might even participate in the unison clapping. Who knows. Just give it a listen and figure it out …

Aight, aight, aight the first time I heard this song, I lost my mind over how much I loved it. Years later, I still love it. The sample is sick. Who knew country western and underground could melt together so well?  Besides the fact that Atmosphere is undoubtedly a skilled underground hip hop artist, “Modern Man’s Hustle” has got to be one of his best babies, musically. Lyrically, this track is straight up tough love at it’s best. Overall, you got the rawness of underground, the unique sample, tight beat, strong melody, catchy hook, deep flow and even a few what I like to call “best lines” that stick with you. Check it out if you haven’t already. And if you have, I’m sure you’ll press play again.

Today I was introduced (by the coolest chick ever) to Kaki King and I’m thanking my lucky stars for looking out, making the connection and throwing this out there for me to retrieve it. The first song I heard, made me melt in my skin. I got the warm fuzzies, the endorphines floating …. I felt like I was falling in love and that’s exactly what Kaki King’s music will do to you. Her fingers move up and down her guitar effortlessly, carefully stitching every note together, securing the melody. Her voice is like honey – rustic and sweet all at the same time. But it’s the emotion in the music that can’t be replicated. It can’t even be described, but it sounds so good I want to cry.

Lucky for us The Temper Trap made it all the way to the movies. Lucky for you, I got their stuff right here. After their debut in 2006, at an Australian music festival, The Temper Trap’s  catchy sound and alluring vocals rocketed to the rest of the world. With an intro reminiscent of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” and a sound as floaty as U2, their curent single, “Sweet Disposition” is going to rock your world gently and it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll play the track more than once. Other ear-worthy tracks: “Rest”, showing TT’s 60′s pop influence along with  ”Love Lost”, mastering their reference to 70′s soul and mixing it with a money indie sound. Check ‘em out.

The Kills

Somewhere between the silver revolvers and the dirtiness of the bass “Tape Song” by The Kills is sexy in a dramatic, rebellious teenage wasteland-esque sort of way. I dig it all.

Dirty Projectors

•August 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Dirty Projectors “Stillness is the Move”  … The groove-factor is unmistakable as is the vision of Sherpas that comes into my head for some reason everytime I see this video and hear this song. I love how interchangeable this song is. It just works. It’s a little indie, a little urban, a little folky, a little traditional … it’s its own little fondue of genres. Oh, and you gotta love the hip hop influence.  You’ll see what I mean when you see the vid …

There’s always that one song that you come across that clicks with you for the day, week, month, year, whatever. But it’s there and it sticks with you and you remember it from that point on. For some reason yesterday, even though I’ve heard this song countless times, Animal Collective’s “Fireworks” clicked with me more than ever. I needed it. And it needed me, too. Video’s crazy crazy.  Song is crazy good.

The minute I heard this song, I was feeling it from beginning to end.  It’s strong. Expect nothing less from Jigga, of course. And having Kanye and Rihanna on the track is a plus.  The steady chant encompasses all that this song entails: pride. It’s a hot track moving through the airwaves and I’m happy to have jumped on it’s train when it first dropped.

lOve in Earfulls, vol. 1

•August 22, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Just now, about three-and-a-half seconds ago (literally) I decided to make up the “lOve in Earfulls”.  An earfull of what, you ask? An earfull of LOVE. My number one lover will always be my music so I’ma spread a little love to you and hook you up with the good stuff. Some stuff might be old, some might be new to you, but to others it could be the opposite.  Either way, I guarantee you’ll enjoy this first volume of lOve. Expect nothing less …

What beter way to start then with CSS’s “Music is My Hot Hot Sex”? Loved this group for a long time – experimental, though, slighty awkward with a hipster feel, but not hipster in the “immature” sense some like to give. They’re mature in a playful, honest way. Love them. Crazy cool:

Okey, next on the list is from Mod Def’s latest The Ecstatic, which is quite possibly his greatest musical collection to date. Mos got work DONE on this album and it shows through his research of various musical influences, reflection, interlocking melodies and his path of travel from track to track. One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Auditorium” featuring the talented Slick Rick, totally musically reminiscant of Rick’s “Children’s Story”. Mos brings it in every way and everything I mentioned is apparent in this track: the influence, the fluidity, the truth of his finished album. Enjoy and seriously … if you haven’t yet, get your hands on The Ecstatic pronto.

On we go … Ladyhawke: “Paris is Burning”. Great song, even better hook. Reminds me of something from The Sounds, who I also HEART … Gotta love the way she brings Snoopy back to mainstream. Enjoy this funky ‘lil tune. Ish good.

Aight aight aight, next I got some Sam Sparro for you called “Black and Gold”. I heard this song way back when and totally fell in love with it. Why do I love this song? Well … where do I  start? It’s got a groove that’s sexy in a classy, elite sort of way, but lyrics that are desperate in a romantic wannabe Romeo + Juliet sort of way and the video screams creepy-stalker-hot-mysterious-ness-ness-ness. How can you go wrong with that? Check it out:

Miss Regina Spektor is next on the list for this Friday with one of my favorites: “Us”. The song itself rocks, but so does this remix, so after a few minutes comtemplating over which one I should post, I decided on the remix. Why not? I mean, you still got the original song overlayed atop of here-and-there synths, a simple percusison and a little bit of skewed-idity. I just made up that word because I want you to listen to it

Andale! Ahorita: Jehro! Did ya get that? Now, we got Jehro with “Everything”. Love this man. He’s so talented with a sugary, rough raspy voice and a simplicity to his music that is perfection. It’s danceable, grooveable, moveable, swayable, chillable … you name it. Hope you check out his other stuff too, like “All I Want” which is another really stellar track.

Lucky number seven is “If I Feel Better” by Phoenix. I remember when I heard “Alphabetical” by Phoenix back in the day and I was all over it. Ever since then, this talented group has kept me oozing over their stuff. This one is just fun and perfect for getting ready to go out or driving to your destination. It’ll make you want to dance sort of like how Jamiroquai struck our chords and moved our feet in the 90′s with “Virtual Insanity”. You’re gonna like this one:

Finally, number eiGht: last track for this Friday Earfull. I’m gonna end today with Ebony Bones’s “The Musik”. I don’t even need to tell you anything about this song. Just listen to it and thank me afterwards for showing you a good time. Oh, and feel free to dance wherever you happen to be standing. It’s ok. I won’t tell anyone …

Amanda Blank = a super cool member of the female electronica music makers AND what’s even better is that not only are her beats and voice hot, but her lyrics are blunt, witty, sarcastic, mean … honest. I totally dig it. I gottalotta favs from her album “I Love You” so, I’ma go ahead and post some of them here … I don’t think you’ll mind and if you do, go away.  … … … Jusskiddin’.

PS- Go download “Big Heavy”, too. It’s actually my most favorite song by AB but I couldn’t find good audio whilst writing this post … coming soon, though.

“Might Like You Better”

“Leaving You Behind” feat. Lykke Li!

Fleet Foxes, Metric, Discovery & Roisin Murphey

•August 27, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I had deja vu as I was driving into work, which then quickly turned into a dreamy zone-out overload then resulting in me begging my foot to keep pressing the gas and praying my hands would keep steering straight instead of turning into the office parking structure. All I wanted to do was keep driving and listen to the things that can outwardly express how I feel on the inside ’cause that’s how I work and that’s what I’m good at; substituting my own physical words for song melodies and lyrics. It’s just what I do.

The song I wanted to drive off to this morning was “Blue Ridge Mountains” by Fleet Foxes. Not only does their entire self-titled album make you feel like you’re amidst a mixture of incense and hippies, but it heals. Swear. I’ll never get enough of the backyard jam sesh ambience, the cloudy sound of echoey almost meloncholy vocals over a perfectly proportioned volume of  notes and instruments and of course, the lyrics. Let’s cruise …

There are times when I’d just rather be on hiatus, taking a break from life and that’s exactly what yesterday was all about. Of course, I had a song for that, too. “Help I’m Alive” by one of my favorite bands, Metric.  Best line: “If I stumble, they’re gonna eat me alive”. Metric is a lil gothy, a lil electro and a whole lotta indie rock. It’s a great mixture for sure. Not too loud and not too soft, but jusssss right. I’ma post two songs here for you… (the second one is called “Collect Call”)

K, now Discovery should definitely be on your ipod. If they not, you bettah get on it! “Swing Tree” is one of those songs that make me dance chill.  Does that make sense? I love how some parts appear to be skipping, but really, they’re just seasoned musicians and know how to play with the sound and … your mind.  Also, the segue into the halfway-there reggeton rhythm is just fantastic. This is a solid song all aound. Check it:

Hello, laydaaaaay …. Roisin Murphey, you rock me with this one. Off the bat, the entire basis of the song is great. “Primitve”. It’s got that thing that makes it a sexy, dark, sultry almost dirty song. I’m hoping you’ve already heard this one, too. It’s just goooooood. Especially the lyrics. I totally dig these lyrics. Best line: yeah, that would be the whole song, actually. The hook is amazing. And you can’t deny her voice. Mature, soft, sultry … intimidating in a good way. ahhhhhhh so good. …

Not only do I covet everything Karen O wears and sings … but I totally go Ga-Ga for her everytime I listen to YYYs, which is a lot.  Love her energy, her hair, her red lipstick, her bunnyhop dance moves … sssmmmokkkinnn’. yes. songs? even better. I love “Zero” cuz the coolest people always feel this way. AND, I totally dance like this…

Bloc Party. My Favorite. “Silent Alarm” changed my world when that ablum dropped and so did their “Intamacy” album … it’s off the freakin’ hook, but you already knew that. “Intamacy REMIXED”, though, ….. yeah REMIXED … is oOooOOOOoO … PHENOM. I’m gunna go ahead and give you a scoop of one of my favorites from this particular album: ish called “Ares”

Speaking of remixes … OK, I don’t care what anyone says. Mariah is THE BESSSSSST. She’s got perfect pitch, delivers hit after hit after hit and never wastes her talent. Ever since “Vision of Love”, she’s pretty much ruled my universe. Of course I was all over her latest single “Obsessed” when it first dropped but lately I’m feelin’ the Jump Smokers remix version of the song. It’s SICK. Lemme break it down for you:

at precisely 00:02:07, the build-up begins …

at 00:02:24, the break …

then … oh yes .. then at 00:02:42 … the beat DROPS! ish quick, but oh so fun to dance to.

Next is Shakira’s “She Wolf”. Why? Because it’s been exciting to watch her metamorphosis over the years into an even more fantastic artist ; never changing her sound, vocally, but constantly playing with different beats, instruments, lyrics, effects and using the right resources to keep her music going in a stellar direction. It seems like she finally found a new home to lay her talent: with a hot, disco-electric-rock-pop-dance mix. Oh and did I mention how crazy spectacular her choreography in this video is?  It’s animalistic, dirty, mesmerising … forreal. watch it:

Next I got the new Jamie Foxx for ya ears. “Digital Girl” Remix with Drake, The Dream, and of course Kanye. Song’s hottttt, video’s hotterrrrrr. I’m positive you’ll be grooving to this and looking for it in the clubs. Kanye’s verse is the best part of the song fo sho and you’ll hear why. Damn, I still can’t help but think “Jamie Foxx?!” yeah, a bunch-a-singles later … he’s still delivering the hits. Who the hell woulda thought, right? hahaha this one’s GOOOD! Enjoy!

I’ma leave you with a fun dance-able jam that’ll make you do that move that you do when you get happy and wanna dance. Yeah, THAT one. This one’s by Datarock who rules and it’s called “Fa-Fa-Fa” … SOLID!

I scoop up these goodies for your well-being. enjoy!

First is “Kelly”  by Van She – it’s the Lifelike mix and ish GOOOOOOOD. ooooh kelly …

Next on mah list is “Hearts on Fire” by Cut Copy. I love Cut Copy and hope you do too. The short film is pretty rad, too.

“Rich Girls” by The Virgins is an awesome song! I’m posting the Twelves remix because it’s pretty fun. Still, though, you should download the original. It’s super good.

Last but not least is “Cross the Dancefloor” by Treasure Fingers. This is such a great house party jam. love it! You can’t go wrong with it.

and pleeeeease also download “Long Distance Call” (25 Hours a Day Remix) by Phoenix. It’s FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! I can’t find a vid for it yet … but it will come. don’t you fret.

Little Secrets

•September 4, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I just don’t get tired of Passion Pit. EVER. “Little Secrets” is one of those songs that makes you happy. The hook says it all ..  ”Let this be our little secret, no one needs to know we’re feeling higher and higher and higher ….” I dunno ’bout you, but I’m going to go ahead and excuse and throw myself entirely into this song because it’s Thursday and I’m exhausted and bored with the monotony of life and need some … I dunno … Passsion. hehe …

Dear Maccabees, I would like to let you know how much I love you. That’s all, really. For the rest of you, I really hope that you know this band because truly, they are so super-duper-rockin’-awesome that I can’t think of any other bigger or better words to describe them because all I can concentrate on is their music … I’ma post not only one but TWO songs for you on here. Oh, and … you’re welcome.

“First Love” – The Maccabees

“X-Ray” (Filthy Dukes Society remix) – The Maccabees … SOLIDDDD SONGGG!!!!!

Ahhhh the Sounds the Sounds The Sounds … I saw them at a show in AZ several years back and they rocked my world … especially when Maja Ivarsson spit out in the crowd and it landed on my ripped denim jeans. I was in love. Their 70s-punk-esque-mid-80s-dance-electro-rock (whew!) is just fantasmical. Yeah, I made that word up, too.  But I sure didn’t make up how good this song is …

“Know How” by Kings of Convenience feat. Feist makes me nostalgic for the beginnings of fall in Tucson. Not the middle of fall, not the end of it, just the start of it. The air is different at the very start as compared to the middle or end. Even the way the sun sets is different. Shadows, smells, crisp air, a content energy zipping through the low thin clouds … man, I miss the fall … to each their own, though, because according to the vid I found for this song, someone else is reminded of the artform that is surfing. Another great thing about music. Memory. Reminders. Have a listen and create your own scenario …

You know how much I love Passion Pit and Friendly Fires goes hand-in-hand with them. Soooooo, it’s only appropriate that I pay homage to my other favorite! “Strobe” is a song that blesses my urge to involve myself with the night. I hear this song and the scenario that involves blankets of stars wrapping me up with conscious sleep and teaching me to dream while I’m awake takes place. Sounds pretty great, huh? It is. Listen and you’ll see what I mean. Oh and listen out for the whistles. It’s the little additions like that, that make a song even better.

Chee Hoooo it’s motha f**kin’ friday and I’m ready for a night out on the town! I’ma mix this here sesh up a bit and post a little bit new, a little bit old, but allllll G! SOOOOO … here we go!

“Walking on the Moon” (Seamus Haji and Emmanuel Club Mix) – The Dream feat. Kanye West … man, this remix is good, although K-Smooth’s is WAAAAAAY better!

“Teachers” by Daft Punk … from their “Homework” album. A breath of fresh air for me when I heard their first album. I fell in love. This one pays homage to the best of the best by the almighty, creative, influential, revolutionary, risky, amazingly amazing … DAFT PUNK. Thank you and you’re welcome.

“Chillin’” by Wale feat. Lady Gaga … love the M.I.A. influence here. you’ll see what I mean.

“Starstruck” by 3oh!3 … this is a crazy lil song that makes me go woo woo (that’s my whistle sound. You’ll understand why I felt the need to spontaneously yet swiftly throw in a cat-call whistle after you listen to the song…)

“West End Girls” by Pet Shop Boys. Don’t you even lie to me right now… No, don’t even do it. … no… Don’t you dare even try to do it. You and I both know that you know and love this song. It’s emo in all the right ways. Here’s to the 80′s “serious look” … and don’t try to play like you son’t do that look either! hehehe …

Wow. This one is one of my all-time favorites. I know that may seem kinda impossibe, as I have thousands and thousands of favorites, but honestly, Aerosmith’s “Crazy” drives me crazy every time I hear it. It’s such a hot song, video’s even hotter. Makes me wanna run away and get into some trouble …

OKEYYYYY I’m lovin’ Beyonce and the whole Supreme-esque-performance-in-3′s thing. Honestly, I do. I think it’s fabulous and I know that other female solo artists are probably kicking themselves for not using the valuable performance ”dos” their for-mothers left them. And I mean, she’s just so damn beautiful that really, no matter what she does is going to be … basically … FANTASTIC. “Ego” is one of my favorite songs. Why? Because it’s empowering and yeah, next time I’m out, I’m gonna flaunt it. I’ma gonna show it and baby, I’m gonna love it. ‘Cause I can back it up. hehehe …

“Fireflies” by Owl City … manohmanohman … hehehe :) what a good song and great video, too. Song it very Postal-Service-”Brand-New-Colony”-ish. love.

K, I’m taking it back a few years with one of my most FAVORITE DJs …. DJ Keoki! I remember purchasing his “Jealousy” album when I dropped in LA to visit family. I cruised the music stores and laid my youthful, excited hands on a pretty little gold-covered cd …. I still thank myself today for having such fantastic musical instinct and buying that album.  My favorite track on the album is “Smile”. The way the song builds is so much fun. It’s the fun of the chase and the waiting game all in one. The song builds, then drops and builds and slows, and builds and breaks and then builds and builds and builds until it comes to that calm before the crazy, energetic bass boom that makes you bust whatever moves you feel makin’. Woo! “A smile is like a wedge that takes me from the edge. I love a smile, don’t you?” ….

Relaxation. dance. Respiration. drive. Meditation … cool out. We all need it. I know I do. Let me help you get there …

“Half Mast” by Empire of the Sun is like … umm … my most favorite song to get stuck in my head. For you that know it, I know you’re singing the hook right now: “.. Ohh Ohhhh Ohhhhhhhhh Hoooneeey I neeeeed yooou …”

Love the fact that this here Vandaveer vid is a “Lavomatik Session”. Also love how great they sound. Did I mention I heart them? ‘Cause I really really do. And just now, I sorta toyed with the idea of yellow hair.

“The Greatest” by Cat Power – I guess if I could describe what floating in water sounds like, this could be the song I choose. There’s something about the echoey vocals strewn through sad violins and a fading piano that allow this song to kidnap you for its entirety. With a touch of “Moon River” mixed with a little bit of Sarah McLachlan’s ”Last Dance”, this song will help you get where you wanna be.

I just love me some My Morning Jacket, especially their song “Wordless Chorus”. Let your mind go … no company necessary to assist in this drift, all you need is yourself.

Always reminded why Basement Jaxx is my most favorite in the world. But you already knew that! This song is exactly how I feel sometimes. Ok, I’m lying. A lot of the time. HA. It’s called “Feelings Gone” and it also features the fabulous Sam Sparro. Enjoy, loves.

The Teenagers “Homecoming” is so totally spot-on-reflective of today’s youngsters. It’s so cool to hear songs that are blunt and tell it like it is. But this song is fantastic even without the lyrics, but honestly, the facebook reference is classic.

OK, raise your hand if you remember ”Wild Horses” by The Sundays. Now, raise your hand if you remember “Wild Horses” by The Sundays ANNNNNND sang it at the top of your lungs in your room, car or wherever you were listening to it in secret whilst crying over some dummy who broke your heart. Yeah, I KNOW. I totally just brought it back.

Miike Snow, in my opinion, is a great dose of “awesome” when you need one. truthfully, why wouldn’t you want a dose of “awesome” EVERYDAY? If you don’t, you’re lame. But, still listen to these … if you listen, maybe you’ll change your mind and your lame situation. hehe …

“Cut Logic” by Miike Snow (I don’t know about you, but I find it amusing when people take random ass flicks – such as Rocky II – and put them to really rad music – such as “Cut Logic” -)

“Burial” by Miike Snow. Maaaaaaaaaan, do I love this vid. I don’t know if it’s the sincerity of the people in it or the realness of the kids dancing … it’s somethin’, though, ’cause I like it. A lot. So, what chu waiting for? Press play already! Oh, and the best line? “At your own burial, don’t forget to cry”.

Band of Horses “Is There a Ghost” is the kind of song I sometimes dream about. Excellent vocals by the man himself and lyrics we’re all  familiar with. And watching people get their ass beat with pillows is also pretty excellent.

Can’t go wrong with a side of Go Sailor once in a while. Here’s one of my favs “Together Forever in Love”. I almost used this song for the outtakes of a film I made in college buuuut, didn’t happen. Either way, this one is fun to dance to.

FINALLY!!! The weekend is here and I dunnoboutyou, BUUUT I’m ready for it. Enjoy these lOvely goodies …

Santigold + Pharrell + Julian Casablancas = straight up RAD. I don’t even need to say anymore except … press play now.

Amy Mac Donald’s “This Is The Life” (DJs from Mars Remix) is just sooo good it’ll have you dancing from the get-go.  I dig her style and this lil ditty is always an appropriate weekend jam. It’s time to move those stiff legs of yours.

Yo La Tengo. “Black Flowers”. Oh mah goodness greatness goodie good. Sure, I may have slowed it down just a tad for you but, alas, it is surely worth it. I’m not really sure if it was the subtle horns/trumpets/etc. that got me or the over-all flow of this song. Like I said, I dunno. But what I do know, is that I still love it. And it’s good.

Auuuurrright. Bat For Lashes is next with a good remix (again by DJs from Mars) of  ”Daniel”, one of my fav BFL songs. If you know someone named Daniel, that’s awesome. If you don’t, fantastic. Either way, just give this one a listen and thank me later …

Kay, Ima hit you with some Yeasayer and a song that I adore called “Tightrope”. Of course I adore everything about Yeasayer, but the thing about this song (really, why I chose it) is the lyrics. We’ve ALLLLL been there. Here’s to that.

KUMISOLO! Love this one.  ”Danse Music” is … how can I say … BRILLIANT! Great vibe, awesome song in the first place but even the best can be just a little better with the right lil twerks and additions here and there and this here YACHT remix is … yeah … really really great.

You know I love me some Animal Collective and, well, I also love me some Taken By Trees soooooooooo how on earth could I NOT love a Taken By Trees take on an Animal Collective favorite AKA “My Girls” but in a Taken By Trees kinda flava  … “My Boys”. Man, I love you, song.

MGMT … my all-time favorite song “Electric Feel” but this time with a visit from Biggie and Justice … me likey. The thing I love about electro-anything is how each song’s remix is executed. It’s an art. Nuff said.

Royskopp, The XX, The Noisettes, The Dutchess & The Duke, Awesome New Republic and soooo much more …

Lucky for you, I’ve got A LOTTA new stuff to put up. It’s such a mix, I don’t even know where to start.  Because I have “musical attention deficit disorder”, I mix genres like nobody’s business, sticking true to my eclectic nature. That means, right now, you’re going to experience a type of musical explosion that’s going to break the world beneath you, leaving you in solitude to float through the sounds of geniuses, yes, geniuses, and you will fly high high high into the clouds beyond the sea and into a puddle of divine satisfaction, leaving you with one thing and one thing only to say … “WOW”.

Ok, so maybe I’m exaggerating but, who cares? Point is, I got some good stuff for you to listen to and I can’t concentrate enough to sort it by genre, so I’m warning you that songs will jump from here to here to there. Genres are disappearing anyway soooo … here goes!

The Noisettes “Never Forget You” – Why? Because anything with a 60s or Motown influence that’s GOOD, I like. Ok, like Amy Winehouse. Do I even need to say her last name? She crazy, but crazy good. There’s a sweet naïveté that comes with this sound of music. You can’t deny the innocence in these songs. Always hopeful. If you don’t believe me, listen to Duffy. She’ll tell you. Yeah, she’ll tell you she’s gonna leave you but she’ll tell you in that sweet syrupy voice and you probably won’t even believe her.

The XX “Crystalized” – Why? One of my favorite things … ONE of them … is feeling creeped out. Some think that’s weird, but I really don’t care about them.  And ANYWAY, this song is so effortlessly good. That sounds bad, because I know effort went into making this song, but you know what I mean. It’s just so chill with that creepy little jab and, well, I dig.

Mayer Hawthorne “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” – Why? Because! Remember I already told you that I love anything with a 60s Mowtown influence that’s GOOD? Ok, well, Mayer Hawthorne is (of course) good, musically, but he’s funny as hell too and I love all of his videos.  Shoot, I wonder if I should post 2 vids from him here …. hmmm … ok, I will.

Mayer Hawthorne “Maybe So, Maybe No”

Empire of the Sun – “Walking On A Dream” (Kids At The Bar Remix) – Why? Oh, puh-leeeeeeez DON’T ask me why. You know exactly why. Because it’s THE BEST! NUFF SAID!

Royskopp “What Else Is There?” – Why? Because the first time I heard it, I felt perfect. I also knew exactly what I wanted to write about when I heard the song. Slowed vocals over a faster beat drive me crazy in a really really good way.

Cassie “Must Be Love” (remix with Busta Rhymes, Diddy, Day 26 & Redcafe) – Why? Well, it’s a sexy song. C’mon, admit it. I will. The minute I heard those sensual guitar strings being played, I was attracted to this song for sure. Am I completely in love with it? No. But I definitely don’t mind if I hear it on the radio. Honestly, though, I owe it to the guitars for making this song good. I almost posted the instrumental, but I like the part where Busta says, ”You’re so genetically impeccable”. hehehe …

“Alice” – Why? Reason number A: I have a strong fascination with Alice in Wonderland. Reason letter 2: It’s actually great. I mean, this was made for getting into a space if ya know what I mean ….

The Dutchess & The Duke “Mary” – Why? Besides a great vid, and a great simple melody and lyrics that make sense to me in every way, I love songs and films that punch people. Whether these people are real or fictional, I don’t know, but either way, I like them. You suck, Mary, whoever you are.

Phoenix “Long Distance Call” (25 Hours A Day Remix) – Why? I’ll get to why in a sec but first .. I’m sorry if I already posted this (I don’t think I did, though…) but I LOVE this remix sooo … actually, I’m not sorry b/c I know that if I did post it before and you heard it, you loved it, too, so really … you’re thanking me right now. And you’re welcome. I think that’s enough explanation as to why I’m posting this great great song.

Mullage “Trick’n” – WHY??? ooooh weee … well, the thing about a good rap song is usually one of 3 things: 1) a SICK beat, 2) unbeatable samples or 3) great, catchy lyrics. So, why on earth did I choose this one? Because for those of you that listen to hip hop, it’s got that same sexy yet sad gangsta vibe that QT had in “Westside” or that Kurrupt had in “We Can Freak It”, shoot, even the same damn vibe that was in Master P’s “I Got The Hookup”. You’ll be trick’n, too, when you hear this. heh heh heh …

Awesome New Republic “Digital World” – Why? Jeez, do you really need to ask? The thing I appreciate about Awesome New Republic is their sound. One song doesn’t sound the same. Shoot, even the one song itself doesn’t sound the same because it’s continually progressing and moving. Don’t get what I mean? Listen to this one … but really listen to it.

Vetiver “More of This” – Why? Just listen to them. Vetiver is a really cool band. Forrreals. They’re a little hippe, little 60s rock, little folky and a whole lotta rad.

Tanya Morgan “Morgan Blu” – Why? You already know how much I like Blu. He’s a solid hip hop artist. Creative, fluid, nice voice, smooth flow … so there’s no question that this one is nothing less than good, especially ’cause it’s a Tanya Morgan joint. It’s a good summer jam … I realize it’s almost the end of September. So what? Summer’s only over when you let it be over.

Viva La Revolucion!

In celebration of Mexican Independence day, I decided I wanted to post some of the classics … you know the ones. The ones that your nana sang when she was making tamales or tortillas in the kitchen … the one your tata taught you, only to push you out into the yard at the next family party and make you sing it in front of your tias and tios all embarrassed … the ones that your drunk cousins and you always collectively sing at weddings, funerals, family trips, whatever … I asked my friends to share with me the songs or artists they love to help me with this post and OH MAN, do they have great and hilarious taste. You may now take a stand with your favorite brand of tequila and get to singing … Salud!

Marcus’s pick: artist: Chalino Sanchez … and his gun … I’m slowing it down with “Nieves de Enero”  and “Flor Margarita”- great songs! Best part of the 2nd vid is the little point that he does in “Flor Margarita” right before he sings “Margaritaaaaaa”. Watch for it.

Makani’s pick: anything cumbia! Lucky for you, I got a great cumbia: “Juana La Cubana” by Fito Olivares. Asi asi! Do what you was taught!

Freddy’s pick: Johnny Z! hehehehe oh man all I need to do is hear the first beat of a Johnny Z song and a smile comes to my face. Why? Because he is ridiculously hilarious and always fun to dance to. He’s gotta be at every family party fo sho!

Ai’s song pick:  “Sabor A Mi”, artist pick: Los Lobos! …. Truly, a fantastic and beautiful song choice. If this song doesn’t make you want to fall in love, I don’t know what will. Give this one a listen and see for yourself … Man, Eydie Gorme & Trio Los Panchos take it away! And one of my favs sung by Los Lobos “Cancion del Mariachi”!

Andy’s picks: some Mariachi and some Banda El Recodo! Viejo, you’re in for a treat! I got one of my favorite Nydia Rojas mariachi songs “Mexico Y Su Musica” and “Que Bonito” by Banda …. ahahahahahahhaahaa

Rene’s pick: some Bronco! Well, mi Rene …. I picked a ballad for you … “No Nos Vamos A Olvidar”! I just LOVE the album cover. ajajajajajaja ….

Denise’s pick: “Volver”! Yes please. This is a definite classic. No question about it! Great choice, girl!!

And here are a few of my very favorites…

Ramon Ayala “Un Riconcito En El Cielo” – it’s at every family party, every Quince and every wedding. If it’s not, it’s not a party.

“Las Hijas De Don Simon” Tierra Tejana Band  – by far one of my most favorite songs to dance to!

“La Puerta Negra” Los Tigres del Norte – ajajajja how can you be Mexican and not love this song. It’s just perfect. Thank you, Tigres, for La Puerta Negra!

Selena version of “Tu Solo Tu” just makes me weak … def a favorite!

Karen O, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Kings of Leon, Crystal Castles, The Drums & more …

•September 30, 2009 • 2 Comments

I like the eerie. I like the funk. I like electro. I like bass. I like “Tooth Decay” by Black Moth Super Rainbow. Oh and I really really really like synths. And crazy made-up animation. Love that.

So, I’ve been peeping the “Where The Wild Things Are” soundtrack and I love it. Karen O (my favorite as you know!) does this whole soundtrack … hence the  ”Karen O & The Kids” thing goin’ on. It’s got that Jack-Johnson’s-Curious-George-sing-a-longs-vibe-meets-Maria-from-Sesame-Street-awesomeness, but way and I mean WAAAAYY cooler and more rad because HELLO Karen O is doing it and she rocks the planet. Anyway, here’s one of the tunes. It’s called “Capsize”. You’re welcome. Oh, and thank you, Spike Jonez, for making yet another incredible film! Yeah Yeah Yeeeaaah!!

“Lust For Life” by Girls: This music video definitely falls into the “my bank of favs” category. Everything about it is so great. Simplicity is best. Simplicity with cool hipsters? Even better. Now for the icing on the cake: the song is so much fun. The transitions are cool and the lyrics are priceless. Hey, it made me chuckle when I heard it because it’s sarcasm at its best. Or poking fun  … either way.

“I Want You” by Kings of Leon is one of the sexiest, hottest songs out there. Hands dowsn, they are one of the greatest bands of this decade. Their music is incredible. Their sound is completely unique. My rundown for this song: Vocals = sexy as hell. Lyrics = controversially true = HOT. Overall Sound = SMOKIN”. If this song were a girl, she’d be a total babe.

“Vanished” by Crystal Castles is perfect for today. Absolutely perfect. This song puts me in the zone I wanna be in with it’s steady, hypnotizing beat and happy keys. Perfect mix of serious and dreamy all at the same time.

“Surfing” by The Drums makes me want to go to the beach and surf even though I’ve never surfed before in my life. Is that even right? Why, yes, yes it is. Sometimes a simple song like this one is all you need for the day to go by faster. And when lyrics include “down down baby, down by the rollercoaster, sweet sweet baby, I’ll never let you go”, well, that’s the chemistry for a great day.

Do you have certain songs that you lock away in your mind and heart for one reason or another? I do. This is one of those songs for me. I hear it and I’m taken back to the place I belong for its entirety.  Tristan Prettyman “Electric”:

“Silver Trembling Hands” by The Flaming Lips is a very colorful song. I get really cool visuals when I hear it … a mix of “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory”, The Beatles’s “Yellow Submarine” and Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” with a splash of random vignettes of Andy Warhol’s Factory events … Gotta love The Flaming Lips for their heavy creative energy and their attempts to grow musically, meeting success each time.

Okey, trusssst, I’m all for originality and breaking the mold and what not, especially in the music biz, but honestly (and I mean honestly) … I love a good cover song when it’s done right and not completely slaughtered by the newbie tryin’ to take a bite at the chords. One of my many favorite covers? An acoustic version of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Gonna Come” by the beautiful Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. Her voice is magic. Nuff said.

Another recent favorite cover of mine is Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” by Paramore. Not only am I completely in love with Paramore (more specifically, Hayley) but Kings of Leon is hands down one of the best bands out there of this time, so the song is ridiculously good.

Ok, on the real, I’m straddling the fence on this one. There are so many things wrong with this song, yet the two things that are right with it just might cancel out the bad. First, the lyrics are horrible. Key$ha, I know you didn’t just say you brushed your teeth “with a bottle of Jack” did you? That doesn’t make you hardcore. It makes you stupid for trying. Also, I don’t like the channeling of Fergie. You sound just like her when you spit them “rhymes”. Fergie ruined the Black Eyed Peas and I’ll never forgive her for that. Just don’t do it. And please stop the rapping. A pop singer rapping ruins everything hip hop means. The “S” in you name as a dollar sign, is cute, but that was over like 9 years ago, kid. You bit Gaga’s “Just Dance” hook b/c yours sounds very very similar… you’re a newbie, though. You’ll learn. The good news? You gotta mighty catchy hook (thanks to Gaga’s influence) and a solid overall sound of the song (minus the vocals) so I’m sure at some point, I’ll be dancing to you in the club by default, therefore making you the winner in this stitch.

New Madge for ya ears called “Celebration”. Vid is great. … I don’t care how old she is, Madonna looks amazing and still makes good music. She’ll always be the Queen of the Gwens and the Gagas …

Silver City’s “Ghostland Observatory” is ohsososososo good. Nice to chill too. Put it on today to get some work done and guess what? It worked. Dreamy electro … niiiice.

Next, “Whatever You Want” by Consequence feat. Kanye West and John Legend. I like this one because it’s a different sound for hip hop and I’m looking forward to some good remixes of it, too. I know Kanye can be douchey sometimes, but he’s still talented musically. Except when he tries to sing.

“Summertime Clothes” by Animal Collective. Do they ever make anything bad? No. They’re crazy and I totally love it.

Didya miss me? Ya did, did ya? Well, lucky fer you, I got what you need: new sounds. Not all are necessarily “New” per se, but I hope they are for you.  This is gunna be a short and a sweet one. Lots of different things, no real “theme” here. Just stuffs. Here we go….!

“Skeleton Boy” by Friendly Fires – Why? b/c I was listening to them all day yesterday and I stil lhad this song in mah head today. THAT’S WHY. Now, it’s your turn.

“Open Your Eyes” – United States of Electronica – Why? Well, aside from the slightest slice of cheesy in this song, I manage to enjoy it anyway. Ah, who am I kidding? I like it. If you don’t agree, then don’t listen and move on to the next.

“World News” – Local Natives – Why? I highly recommend this song. Too bad I couldn’t find a decent cut to share with you. Don’t you worry, though. I’ve made a mental note that I owe you a clean track of this one. And you will get it soon. I hope this live vid will suffice for the time being.

“Waking Up In Vegas” – Katy Perry – Why?  ….. Really??  ….. You really have to ask me? I know she can’t sing live. I know her songs dance on the edge of being trite, but I don’t care right now.  Right now I want to hear a remixed Katy Perry sing about waking up in Sin City. Done.

“Fabulous Dramatics” – 4th Avenue Jones – Why? hahahahahahaha why the hell not? This track about crazy ex-tricks. Mix that with a hip-hop-rock blend and you’re good to go.

“The Reeling Police” – Chamillionaire vs. Passion Pit (The Hood Internet) – Why? B/c it works, that’s why. And it’s got a Passion Pit bed.

“Fluorescent Adolescent” – Arctic Monkeys – Why? Well, it’s the first video with clowns in it that I can handoe.

“So Far” – Miguel Migs – Why? I find it only approriate that I promote him since he’s performing in Honolulu tonight … annnnd I happen to love this guy. Enjoy.

“SHOTS” – LMFAO feat. Lil Jon – Why? Weeeeeeeell, speaking of performing in H-town, LMFAO also has a show tonight so, I figured, I might as well get in the mood for the show …. annnnnnnnnnd I might as well  go ahead and take  some shots, too.

“Kelly” – VanShe – Why? Well, considering I posted the original track already, you know I like this song. This remix is just so friggin’ late 70s, early 80s, that  I can’t help myself. I had to post it.

“I’m Good, I’m Gone” – Lykke Li (Black Kids Remix) – Why? Because I love Lykke Li. I need not say more!

In through the out door

Venturing outward is where it’s at … enjoy…

“Free Me” – Joss Stone. OHHHHHHH MANNNNN … I LOVE YOU, JOSS STONE.

“Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” – Thom Yorke. Eerie? Yes, please. I love his sound … never fails me.

“Go Jetsetter” – The Postmarks.  Gentle with a touch of resistance, if that makes sense. In other words, I like.

“Come Back Clean” – The Crystal Method feat. Emily Haines. I’m a definite fan of this track.

“Boom” – Anjulie. This song is hot. I like Anjulie’s style, musically … I’m looking out for this one fer sure.

“Between Two Lungs” – Florence + The Machine. What’s NOT to like about Florence + The Machine? … Experimental, dreamy, emotional, fun and awkward all at the same time.

“DARE (Soulwax Remix)” – Gorillaz. Perfect for oooozing into a nice puddle of chill.

“Boat Behind” – Kings of Convenience. I enjoy these boys. Seriously. Every song is chill like this. Good stuff.

“Young Wild Hearts” – The Noisettes. I’d compare The Noisettes with Mizz Winehouse buut, I just can’t. I love Amy. and I love the Noisettes. So, we’ll just leave it at that.

“Black & Blue (Tiga Remix)” – Miike Snow. DUUUUUUUUUUUDE … Miike Snow is THE SHIT!!! Thta’s all I have to say about that.

“1901 (Acoustic version) – Phoenix. As I’ve mentioned before, since “Alphabetical”,  I was hooked. Go ahead and pull me in, Phoenix. Go right ahead. You make me happy.

The Indie Diet

Press play:

“Island IS” – Volcano Choir – My favorite part comes at 2:45 …. If you love Bon Iver, you’ll love Volcano Choir. Why? Because it’s the saaaaaaaaame guy, dude: Justin Vernon. His voice is undeniable.

“Poison Lips” – Vitalic – You can’t go wrong with anything by Vitalic, but I happen to really really like this track just a wittle more than some of the others. There’s a streamlined motion to this song that makes it soooo good … seamless transitions. Gotta love that kinda steady groovery. Yeah. I just made up that word.

“Heart Skipped A Beat” – The XX – Since I’ve heard them, they have not disappointed me. Their adolescent melancholy is haunting and attractive at the same time. This song in particular is in my special category.

“A Hundred Hearts” – The Swimmers – There’s a mature naïveté to this song that I can’t get enough of. That’s the best way for me to describe it.

“Service Bell” – Grizzly Bear feat. Feist – I can’t remember if I already posted this song, but then again, I don’t really care because it’s so damn good. The progressive intensity of the song and the calm at the end is the key to it’s effectiveness.

“Another Day” – Jamie Lidell – You know I have a weak little soft spot for that Motown goodie goodness sounding stuff. You KNOW this. So, of course I’m gonna post this. DUH. It’s happy with that soul flava that I love so much. And you will too … c’mon,  just press play.

“Decatur” – Sufjan Stevens – Who doesn’t like a song about hating on your stepmom, but really liking her in the end? Oh, Sufjan, I love you and your banjo music that tells me cool, random stories.

“I’ll Believe In Anything” – Wolf Parade – Besides the vocals being unquestionably unique, what’s not to like about Wolf Parade? You like how the instruments are moreso the emotion of the song? Kinda strange being that his voice is so aggressive, but it works. It’s almost too much, but an acceptable amount of too much. Oh, and you gota love the lyric: “Nobody knows you and nobody gives a damn.”

“Be Set Free” – Langhorne Slim – When an artist can sit on the ground, in the dirt, wearing light colored pants, at night with untied dusty black boots and wrinkly shirt with a single light shining on their face and make music with nothing but the sound of their voice and a guitar … I’m so in. Langhorne Slim, man, you got soul, brotha.

“Volts” – Screaming Lights – bass, guitars, drums, redic. love this one.

“Gax” – Boys Noize – One of the hottest tracks on the album fo sho. Totally solid stuff right here. Enough venturing out to make it an “out-of-the-box” track but with enough musical smarts to make it equal parts stellar.

“Face To Face On High Places” – School of Seven Bells – This is a band that is so fantastically unique, I’m going to post two songs by them just so you can hear the array of instruments and melodies used. They’re pretty genius. I appreciate bands that use their resources and make a solid something out of too many everythings. Different is what counts. That’s talent.

“iamunderdisguise” – School of Seven Bells – this song rocks. period.

So, I’m sitting in a coffee shop reading about … music …DUH. It’s what I do best. Anywho, I read up and collected some goods to share … The up-and-coming bands: that’s where it’s at. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Pete and J – “Plenty Good Reasons”

Free Energy – “Dream City”

Freelance Whales – “Starring”

The Golden Silvers – “Arrows of Eros”

Local Natives – “Airplanes” (BTW, I haven’t forgotten that I owe you a vid for a previous song I posted by these gems.)

Spiral Beach – “Voodoo”

The Ugly Suit – “Chicago”

It’s been a minute, but I’m back with my head filled to the brim with new sounds for your ears … yeeeeah, this earfull is going to make up for the past week that was absent from my posts. I’m sorry. No excuses here. Won’t happen again. Here ya go!!!

Nurses – “Caterpillar Playground” – I’m totally crushing on this song right now (along with a few others) but, this one is so unique I’m putting it in first place today because I want you to hear it … first. I love stuff that’s outside the box, ESPECIALLY music. So, in other words: I really really really have a big crush on this one.

The Shaky Hands – “Already Gone” – Even though the song has disheartening lyrics, it’s upbeat, so it kinda makes it happy. I like when songs trick you like that.

The Civial Wars – “Poison & Wine” – This song absolutely tears me apart inside. It’s instrumental and vocal progression is … perfect … a seamless transition from a solemn first verse to a passionate, emotional hook and back to a quiet close.  Not only is the song incredible, but the video is done fantastically, totally doing the song justice; honoring it’s emotion.

Yeasayer –  ”Ambling Alp” – Here’s the breakdown: you know I’m a Yeasayer fan already, but leaving my bias behind, this song absolutely rocks. The sounds, the sounds, the soundsssss! Makes my ears melt, in the best way. With a percussion that screams “SOOO EIGHTIES!!!!” and notes that fall in all the right places, OH! and a voice that’s so perfectly awkward, you get one of those songs that’s going to be one of “those songs”, catch my drift? Did I mention how great the hook and the bridge are? I didn’t? Well, they are. Great combination of resources and creativity. 20 stars for Yeasayer. Guarans you’re going to listen to this song more than once. It’s ok … go ahead.

O+s – “The Fox” – When I hear this song, I just want to lay down and look at something beautiful.  Or the celing on a cloudy day. I duno why. It’s dreamy, haunting, beautiful and best of all, simple.  Enjoy …

Faded Paper Figures – “North By Northwest” -There’s a Postal Servce vibe that I can’t shake, therefore I like it. That’s all.

Flyleaf – “Missing” – I peeped the new Flyleaf album whilst sifting through the other new ones out and besides their new single “Again”, this one caught my ears, too. Awesome hook, for sure – makes the entire song listen worthy, in my opinion.

Monsters of Folk – “Dear God” (Sincerely M.o.F.) – I think it’s the harp that does it for me in ths one. And the strings. And the guitar. Man, I like this one. Even though it’s slow, there’s a funk to it. A little soul goes a long way and the blusey influences laced between notes brings this song to another level.

Local Natives – “World News” – Remember when I promised you I’d get better audio of this song? I never break my promises. Here it is … you’re welcome.

Joy Williams – “Speaking A Dead Language” – The best word to describe this song: delicate. You can’t deny the sweet naïveté of this track. You also can’t help but love it.

Tegan and Sara – “The Cure” – Can I just say that “Sainthood” is a STELLAR album, please? Thanks. Tegan and Sara never let me down. “Sainthood”‘s maturty is awesome both musically and lyrically. I chose to post this song only because I was humming it earlier. Is it just me or does “The Cure” sound like something The Cure would sing? Hmm … I like it.

Get Busy Committee – “My Little Razorblade” – I love The Knife. I love “Heartbeats” by The Knife. I love hip hop. Therefore, I love this song. Sick …

Claire and The Reasons – “Wake Up” (You Sleephead) – She’s got such a soothing voice … this one’s a definite pretty song … makes me wanna sleep. Go figure.

Kristina Train – “Spilt Milk” – OK, guys, I know … I know … I owe you a decent audio version of this song because honestly, this version doesn’t do Kristina Train’s amazing voice any justice. This is the title track to her debut album … she’s got some chords on her. forreals.

Hello Seahorse! – “Bestia” – Coming from Mexico City, Hello Seahorse!’s bilingual lead sings the entire album in Spanish. I love a mature-sounding-Latin-rooted-indie band.

Ryan Adams – “Come Pick Me Up”

Fleetwood Mac – “Rhiannon”

M. Ward –  ”Chinese Translation”

Iron & Wine – “Naked As We Came”

My Morning Jacket – “Where to Begin”

Band of Horses  – “The Great Salt lake”

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – “It’ll All Work Out”

Ben Folds Five feat. Regina Spektor – “You Don’t Know Me” (not folky but whatever)

Fleet Foxes  – “Ragged Wood”

Patty Griffin – “Long Ride Home”

Ryan Adams – “Wonderwall” (cover)

The Shins  – “Young Pilgrims”

Ben Folds Five – “Such Great Heights”

Damien Rice – “Delicate”

Meiko – “Hawaii”

Blur – “Tender”

newness

•November 19, 2009 • Leave a Comment

There’s A LOT of new coming …. new singles, new artists, new albums … new everything. Ish good. What Ima gunna do right now is (hopefully) intro you to the ones you haven’t heard yet. If you’ve heard ‘em already then …  BLEH! If not, YAY! Either way, I highly suggest you put your headphones on and take a musical break … with me. K, here we go …

Deer Tick – “Baltimore Blues No. 1″ – These guys have a new album coming out, titled “More Fuel for the Fire”, suposedly dropping December 1st. This here song is featured on the album – live version though. I love it. Do you?

The Watson Twins – “Just Like Heaven” – I’m not usually a HUGE fan of covers, but like I’ve said before, when they do the song some justice, I’m all ears. Oh, yeah aaaaaand these girls got a new album coming out: Talking To You, Talking To Me, Feb. 9. Check it out.

Half-Handed Cloud – “You Wouldn’t Embarrass Me, Would You?” & “Once, Twice, Seven Times a Werewolf” – Why is HHC cool? Well, considering John Ringhofer put together a 46-song compilation of 9 years of crafty musical construciton and out-of-the-box experimentation, me thinks it’s totally worth it. Give it a whirl. If it’s not your style, then it’s not your style. But at least you know it’s out there.

“You Wouldn’t Embarrass Me, Would You?”

“Once, Twice, Seven Times A Werewolf” (start this one at 0:25:00 secs.)

Animal Collective – “What Would I Want? Sky”  and “On A Highway”- Why? … Do you even need to ask why I’m including them in this post? If you do, you need to check yourself, slap yourself in the face, drink some cold water and come back and apologize. kiddin’ … kind of. These geniuses have a new 5-tracker in stores December 15th called “Fall Be Kind” (digital release hits on November 23rd …). I’m gonna throw you some advice – whether you take it is up to you – but it could save your life. Seriously. Ok, maybe not seriously … no joke, though, get this album in your hands.

“What Would I Want? Sky”

“On A Highway”

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band – “Albatross, Albatross, Albatross” and “Going On A Hunt” –  WHY? Ohhhhman, this band is absolutely listen-worthy. Who are these dudes?  The Seattle band consists of Benjamin Verdoes (vocals, guitar), Marshall Verdoes (drums), Traci Eggleston (percussion, keys, vocals), Matthew Dammer (synth, guitar, trumpet) and Jared Price (bass, vocals).  I read this description today of their debut self-titled album and I really really really wish I had been the one to write it … “Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band’s self-titled debut twitches and writhes with capricious tempo shifts, quiet harmonies dissolving into frantic Brain May-inspired rifs faster than you can say ‘time signature’ “. Now, press play.

***”Albatross, Albatross, Albatross”

“Going On A Hunt”

Marrisa Nadler – “River of Dirt” and “Ghosts and Lovers” – She doesn’t have a new album coming out, as far as I know … buuuuut “Little Hells” came out earlier this year and it’s pretty great. She’s got a breathy, echoing voice of smoke and sugar, sliding through and between the notes of her songs … so sweet.

“River of Dirt”

“Ghosts and Lovers”

Justin Townes Earle – “Midnight at the Movies” – Okay, people … I’m NOT a country fan really, if at all … but since this blog’s entire existance is based on the throwing of new music/artists/bands/etc. out there, I figured I’d better start being fair. Justin Townes Earle has already made his mark in country music this year with “Midnight at the Movies” earning the eighth spot on Amazon’s best country record of the year list. If you’re a country person, maybe you already know him. If not, maybe you won’t like this one. I dunno. Give it a listen and see what you think. Oh and if you care, JTE will be on tour  through March 7th. (The tour started the 16th of November).

Harper Simon – “Berkeley Girl” – I like this guy. He’s kinda country, but when I say country I really mean countraaaaaaaaaaaaaay … like a folky-folk-bluesy-harmonica-1940s-big-band-on-low-decibals-romantical-dancing-your-kitchen-type of country. This track’s off his new album, self-titled. Oh, and PS: Harper Simon’s dad is Paul Simon. I forgot to mention that.

Norah Jones – “It’s Gonna Be” and “I Wouldn’t Need You” - I’m a Norah lover. I’ll proudly admit that. Here’s why: I appreciate her love of the folky blues. You can hear the influence of that good ol’ fashioned soul music. It’s sad, sexy, angry and soft. And her voice is just …. ohmeegaawd. So good. So so so good. This entire album is amazeballs.

“It’s Gonna Be”

“I Wouldn’t Need You”

Badly Drawn Boy – “Once Around the Block” and “The Shining” – why? Well, he (Damon Gough AKA Badly Drawn Boy) has a sixth album coming out called “Is There Nothing We Can Do” and this album will also play the role of soundtrack for the film “The Fattest Man in Britain”. Look out for it. In the meantime, two of my fav BDB songs …

“Once Around the Block”

“The Shining”

Frightened Rabbit – “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” – Peoples, listen up! Frightened Rabbit’s third album “The Winter of Mixed Drinks” will be released in March 2010! I’m pretty sure this album’s going to be fantastic. I hope you enjoy their first single as much as I did when I first heard it.

The Pomegranates – “Everybody Come Outside!” – They from Cincinnati and bringin’ the goods to music. Ohhhhhh yessssss.  “Everybody Come Outside” is summer in a bottle. Seriously. I hear it and it makes me want to surf, even though I don’t know how. Or run around in my bathing suit on the beach, playing with my friends … you know, like one of those cool 1960s-ish home videos that’s chopped up into little vignettes of laughter and silliness and perfectly awesome candid shots? Yeah …

The Rapture – “Whoo! Alright Yeah … Uh Huh” – I dunno when The Rapture’s fourth album will be droppin’, but I do know this: French producer Philippe Zdar will be a creative team player on this album, taking the band into a new musical direction … I wonder what direction it’ll be? Man, I love this song, though …

Charlotte Gainsbourg feat. Beck – “Heaven Can Wait” – With a full Beck influential, the French pop princess has gone a slighty different route … folkier. indie-er. hippie-er. i like it.

Beach House – “Norway” – WHOAAAAAAAAAA! WhOa. whoa. I heard this song and that’s all I could say. It’s so excellent. Haunting with a somewhat hopeful progression and those eerie warped sirens … brilliant!

urban spoon

•November 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Takin’ another route today … goin’ urban.

Simply put, I’ll post. You listen.

NEW KELIS!!! “Acapella” – Kelis is always opening herself up, musiclaly, to all things. She tries new beats, new chords, new visuals … it’s like a surprise party everytime another single of hers drops.

Keri Hilson – “I Like” – Besides the fact that Keri Hilson is absolutely GORGEOUS, she can sing, too. This song is a different sound for her in that it’s definitely more dance/pop compared to what we’ve been hearing from her, but you know what?  It works.

Toni Braxton feat. Trey Songz – “So Yesterday” – I’m on the fence about this one still … maybe it’s one of those that needs to grow on me. I dunno, but I’m posting it anyway because it’s new music by Miss Braxton.

Rihanna feat. Justin Timberlake – “Hole In My Head” – Good track. On a side note: JT is sounding more and more like Timbaland everytime he shows voice these days. Rihanna is totally reminiscent of Nelly Furtado in this one, too. That’s all I wanted to point out. I’m not NOT gonna stop dancing to this one, though.

50 Cent feat. Ne-Yo – “Baby By Me” – oooooooooh Fitty! You so crayzaaaaay!

Dondria – “You’re The One” – If Rihanna’s vocal chords made love to Keri Hilson’s, Dondria’s is what they would sound like.

Janet Jackson – “Make Me” – Janet’s using what her brother taught her and’s totally bringin’ it again.  The thing I love about this song is the old school kick!

Rihanna feat. Youg Jeezy – “Hard” – I like this song. I think it’s good and I think Rihanna’s coming out of her “shell” (the emo one) nicely. Some would say slutty, I say … ballsey. She’s trying to make up for her past-self these days … I’m still on the fence about how I feel about her … musically, though, I think she’s well on her new way.

Lloyd feat. J. Holiday and Nikki Minaj – “Take It Off” – Pretty much everything Lloyd has done, I’ve sincerely liked. My favs? “Southside” with Ashanti and “I Want You” (True Remix) feat. Nas and Andre 3000 … but here’s his newest:

Shakira feat. Lil Wayne – “Give It Up To Me” – I’m not a Weezy fan by any means what-so-ever … I AM, however, a big Shakira fan. In a nutshell, this song is HOT.

Robin Thicke – “Sex Therapy” – Ok, Robin Thicke is goooooooood, man. When he first showed face on the music scene and his identity became known, I almost shit my pants. I mean, Alan Thicke’s son? REALLY?! But, the dude can sing and he’s got soul … and it’s good.

Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga – “Videophone” – I. Love. This. Song.

J-Lo “Louboutins” – I’ll tell you why I’m TOTALLY feelin’ this song. The Dream produced it. It’s smooth and not your usual-choppy-J-Lo-flatness that we’re used to with J-Lo. I love J-Lo, don’t get me wrong, but let’s all be honest and face the music: she ain’t a musical artist. BUT, with the right producer, anyone can be an artist. This is like the best and worst thing ever.

New Boyz feat. Ray J. – “Tie Me Down” – aight aight aight … I like this one! I don’t cuuuure what you say … you know you’re gonna groove to it, too.

eyes peeled

I’ve been away for much too much too much too long. But with absence comes much appreciation for what I’ve missed and with that I give you a very broad, eclectic meshing of artists, bands and genres (or so they are called) so you can have a decent helping of what my ears have been up to these past few weeks. There is still more to add to this post, so keep your eyes peeled as well for my continuation …

Capgun Coup -  “Only The Times Are Changing” – Think Vampire Weekend-meets-Hot-Hot-Heat, slighty off tune in an appropriate punk sort of way with a fluctuating attack of fast to medium to fast riffs holding on to you for the better. Is that appealing? They’re dirty good. Their flow is fun and energetic and how could it not be when they pride themselves as being an indie-surf-punk kindofaband, right? Is it something you’d expect from a group of boys (Greg -keys, vox, Sam – vox, guitar, Roads – bass, Jesse – guitar and Eric – drums) from Omaha? Yeah. I didn’t think so. Listen:

A Place to Bury Strangers – “Deadbeat” – Pretty much anything “experimental”, I enjoy. [Insert lewd, bawdy, vulgar comments here, please]. Sooo when I came across A Place to Bury Strangers I was stoked. This Brooklyn-based trio (Oliver Ackermann – guitar, vox, JSpace – drums and Jono – bass) totally wrapped me up in their rock/psychedelic/experimental goodness the minute I heard them.  The best way for me to describe their sound? Dark echoey vocals  pushing through the thunders of their heavy-bass friend, following the sirens of reverb, courtesy of their smooth, undeniable stringed partners in crime.  They seem to reposition themselves in just the right calm of the song. Time for song:

Spoon – “Written in Reverse” – This is an excellent single for Spoon off their album “Transference”. Honestly. It’s not just regular old rock, people. There’s elements in this song that make it soulful in a non-sexual-sexy kinda way. Me thinks it’s the piano with that naughty Fiona “Criminal” vibe. Me also thinks you should listen to it and then tell me how much you like it.

Uffie – “Pop The Glock” – I have a total cereal problem with auto-tune. BUUUUUUUUUT since we live in a world that has seemingly made auto-tune the new Messiah for a hit song, I need to deal. Paris’s own Uffie gets real into it (by “it” I mean the tune that is auto-ed … what?) here and comes to with the simplest of songs, strangely persuasive and surprisingly … not as annoying as I thought. I can’t describe it other than: a sexbot of a song.

Gorillaz – “Stylo” feat. Mos Def & Bobby Womack – FRESHLY LEAKED! and it’s about damn time … I have a feeling when you first hear this song, you might not like it that much. I also have a feeling that you’ll keep listening to it because it’s got that “put-you-in-the-zone” effect. I love it, actually. I mean, Mos def AND Bobby Womack in it, too? The chemistry of a cool collaboration, for sure. Listen and tell me what you think … ps: look out for their next album “Plastic Beach” dropping on March 9th.

Vampire Weekend – “Cousins” – First of all, congrats to these boys for grabbing the Number 1 spot on the Billboard charts for their album “Contra” (which is excellent, by the way …). VW, is hands down one of the most fun bands to listen to. Really. I mean, if you want that feeling of frolicking and laughing on the perfect green grass growing in your backyard overlooking the ocean whilst having the most fun gathering you can possibly imagine with all your favorite people and drinking and dancing until the sun goes down … then this is the band for you. Or you can just make up the best scenario ever, in your opinion,  and then, yes, this is the band for you.

Smashing Pumpkins – “Widow Wake My Mind” – I’m on the fence. I’ll be honest. The somewhat chipper sound to this song rests a tad uneasy on my ears because, well … we’re talking about the Smashing Pumpkins, right? Billy Corgan, right? What’s happening here? The song itself isn’t horrible or anything like that, but it’s just the sheer fact that this is definitely NOT a “Smashing Pumpkins” song. It’s like listening to a lie and I’m not the biggest fan of it. So, what’s the verdict? Do I like it or not? I really don’t know yet but I’m kiiiindaaaa leaning towards NO. Oh yeah, SP’s new album will contain 43 more songs besides this one so let’s hope that somewhere in there my Billy will be found …

I have no biases here, just the music. Maybe you’ve heard some of these, maybe you haven’t. I hope you haven’t, though, because then I’ve done my “job” right. Let’s carry on, shall we?

Latest news: Sofia Coppola plans to adapt Phoenix’s “Love Like A Sunset” (from their Wolfgang Amadeus album) into a film. What kind of film, you ask? I haven’t the slightest clue. I’m imagining some sort of Pink Floyd “The Wall” type ish, though. Oh, and I definitely wouldn’t mind it if that was the case, either. I’m a MONSTER Floyd fan. Take a listen, and see if you get where she might be goin’ …

LIARS: Sisterworld: Call them what you want, I’ll call them rhetorical … allegorical … metaphorical even … they’re transient, experimental, an unsteady steady. Too bad this album didn’t touch on German witchcraft like their last. I’m serious. Musically, I’m intrigued because they possess a quality to NOT conform to what a genre could, should or might be. Rather, they skate across the boundaries collecting new sounds for their latest … project. It’s a much bigger picture then just an album, ya know. Some hate the idea of an album that throws a much-too-much eclectic library of themes, words, beats and sounds at a listener, while others can appreciate the madness for what it is: a basis of boredom, really, if you think about it. Why should an artist lock themselves under titles and reviews? their job is to create and entertain. The Liars did it. And that’s the truth. “Scissor” is an amazing song … I don’t even want to say much except that you should wait til 2:16 … don’t flake out.

“Scissor”

“The Overachievers”

Kaki King: “Falling Day”: Last year I did a post on Kaki King after being introduced to her by a good friend (you know who you are if you’re reading this) and ever since, I made it a point to remember to look for more things King. Well, her newest album Junior is set to come out next month (April 13th) and I’m ready. So far, so great. “Falling day” is a long way from home for miss King … it’s edgier, louder, angrier almost. Her soft touch is still there but she’s not dead or barely trying, man. Not. At. All.

Nosaj Thing: Drift: Not that new, actually, but maybe to you … hmm … Ok, so it’s from their new album Drift and is quite the tracklist, if I do say so myself. And I do. Say. So. Myself. It does something for me, like make me do the whole body ‘bob yo head’ action but in a sort of cut and copied kind of way. If you move in a bob and weave motion, you’ll be aight. So, this big question is: Is it trip-hop? Is it glitch-hop? Puh-leez. Just listen and make up your own genre for it if  th- that’s wh-what you-oooh-oooh  muh-must do to luh-like it.

“Coat Of Arms”

“IOIO”

The Roots: How I Got Over: Finally after waiting for months and months and months, the Roots will be releasing their next album How I Got Over June 8th of 2010 (courtesy of Def Jam records). Woot! The true-to-their-hip-hop roots pioneers are doing it again and this time, I got a feeling (a much bigger and better one than Black Eyed Peas had) that this album is going to blow our minds. Post Script: scoop up your tix for the Roots Picnic in Philly at the Festival Pier on June 5th and see Mayer Hawthorne, Vampire Weekend, Tune-Yards and more.

The Morning Benders: “Excuses”: I like this song in a big bad way. I’m not even going to try and hide it. I think of two thing when I hear this song: Etta James and mustard colored kitchen curtains with tiny brown and orange daisies splashed all over them. And the weird thing is, I have no fucking clue why. Ok, ok, I have an inkling as to why I think of Etta … HELLO! Beginning of the song sounds just like “At last” … oh, come ON. You know it does. As for the made up kitchen curtains … I don’t know.

Booker T. Jones: Potato Hole: Speaking of The Roots … I’m reminded of Booker T. Jones. Why? Because that cool mofo decided that he’s going to join forces with the hip hop crew on his next album, following Potato Hole. I really love when collabos like this happen especially jazzy/soul/rock/blues and hip hop collabos. It just fits and The Roots are the perfect group to do this with.

“Hey Ya” (yeah, it’s the Outkast one … with The Drive By Truckers and Neil Young)

The New Puritans: “We Want War”: Let me state the obvious first: uh, the video rocks. The song … major! It’s got that angry-tribal-Caribbean-power-drum beat and then softens … and then powers up again … whoa, I love it. It’s dark, no doubt, but it’s so interesting. This one will definitely NOT be for everyone, but who cares, man. Just listen to it and see what’s out there. Who knows, maybe you really will like it …

B.O.B. :B.O.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray: So, late last year I was in L.A. meeting with record reps and one of the places I went was Atlantic Records … When I was there, I remember hearing the name “B.O.B.” and all I could think was Outkast’s hit and how much I loved that song when it came out. Turns out, it was the name of a dude who was going to have a hit song … or so they hoped. Of course! I was excited to hear the song because I thought it would be a total flop like every other commercialized mainstream rap and r&b song that’s out and I was preparing my laughter for it … buuuuuuut I’ll tell you what: it wasn’t half bad. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cheesey of course, but I don’t mind it. It’s one of those Ne-yo-Omarion-Lloyd-Mario-esque type songs … you know the ones. Try:

“Nothing On You” (feat. Bruno Mars)

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros: Up From Below: Talk about a great album. I first heard the single “Home” early in 2009, and let me tell you. I fell in fucking love. Seriously, if the song were a person, it’d be my lover. That’s honestly how much I was into it … ok, STILL into it. I know I’m a folky gal at heart, but SHIT! This song is incredible. The album is incredible. The mess of a masterpiece is as easy to listen to as [insert your favorite sound here]! Honestly …

ps- I highly suggest than when you listen to “Home”, you dance barefoot in your home (or outside, the choice is yours) and use a broomstick, shoe or wooden spoon as your microphone. Please let down your hair and skip throughout your house, shouting the song. Yes. Shouting. Laugh when you feel like it.

“Home”

“40 Day Dream”

NEWS! The Gossip: Soooooo, guess who was supposed to be on tour and is canceling all shows due to “personal reasons” except for a performance at Coachella 2010 and a show in NYC? Yup. The Gossip. Bummers. Anywho, look out for a new video for “Pop Goes The World” SUPPOSEDLY coming out this month … I’m still waiting …

“Pop Goes The World”

Phantogram: “When I’m Small”: Sounds like The Organ, musically, at least. Breakdown is good and sad, just how I like it. Vocals are crystal and soft … and the progression is good. It’s by no means a fast song, though. No, this one is at a steady medium pace and each sound ingredient is added just in time for a clear, cut end.

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse: Dark Night of the Soul: First off, very sad news … Sparklehorse aka: Mark Linkous committed suicide, by a shot to his own heart Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Tennessee. He was only 47 years old. Presently, after a long battle with EMI label, Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse are to have their long awaited “Dark Night of the Soul” collaboration (including The Flaming Lips, David Lynch, James Mercer of the Broken Bells etc.) released hopefully as early as this summer.

“Revenge” (feat. The Flaming Lips)

Hey shut the F**K up, boy.

•March 19, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I’m posting these because I like them. More for me, not so much for you. But I felt like sharing.

Passion Pit: “The Reeling”: Nevermind that their entire album (Manners) is amazing (I even had a love for Chunk of Change, but whatever) but this is one of my favs. The feel is great, synths are delicious, drums are on key, vocals are high pitched and right on tune. And let’s not forget the great lyrics. A+.

Girl In A Coma: “Their Cell”: I love to work to this song mainly because the guitar captures a dreamy quality that I like to hear. Though the vocals are strong, the harmony softens and brings some balance ot the song, along with quieter percussion. The progression is there without the hardness.

Peter, Bjorn & John: “Lay It Down” (Golden Filter Remix): I like doing work to this one. Mostly, I just love the lyrics: “Hey, shut the fuck up, boy, you’re starting to piss me off. Take your hands off that girl, you’ve already had enough.”

The Submarines: “Fern Beard”: This is one of those songs that I turn to for one reason or another. Thing is, the simplicity of this song and the nostalgic warmth it brings me causes me to make the ‘one or another’ reasons every reason.

The Walkmen: “I Lost You”: Why? Because it has a vibe that makes me feel free. Free in a way where I want to go out in the middle of a field on a windy day with a scarf held above my head, swaying back and forth pretending the breeze will pick me up and fly me away. ‘Really?’, you ask? No, not really. But kind of. In a not-really-but-secretly-sort-of kind of way.

Lady Gaga: “Money Honey”: What can I say? I love her. Soon, I’m going to do a special for my favorite eccentric lady singer/songwriter/performer.

Little Girls: “Youth Tunes”: I love this song. It’s dark, emotional, messy and hopeful, all the same. Gotta love the crazy weird vid and the sketched out guitar plucking at the end. Yessir.

Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner: “Sky and Sand”: Did I really love this song the first time I heard it? No. I was actually bored with it. Then, I kinda started paying attention to it and found myself bobbing to the beat. Before I knew it, I liked it a little. Reminds me of driving home early in the morning after a long night of raving. Windows down, feet up on the dash, silence … and recollecting events of the night. Am I wrong? Dunno. Duncare.

She & Him: “Sentimental Heart”: Zooey Deschanel. It doesn’t get any better than her sweet, sugary voice.

The Ravonettes: “Veronica Fever”: Song title description: ‘Cruel To Be Kind’.  So good.

Eartha Kitt: “C’est Si Bon”: 1962. French. Classic.

The Ting Tings: “We Walk”: This is probably my (personal) favorite song by them. If I were to pick my favorite song for the radio, then I’d pick “Great DJ” or “Shuttup and Let Me Go”, but were not on the radio here, so I won’t need to be listening to those right now, nor will I need to make either of them a ‘pick’ for this post.

Bat For Lashes: “Wha’s A Girl To Do”: LOVE Natasha. And still can never get over how much she reminds me of Lily Allen. Or of how much Lily Allen reminds me of Natasha. Either way … This is one of my favorite songs. It’s got that creepo ‘Hey-it’s-Halloween-so-I’m-gonna-sit-here-and-listen-to-scary-movie-music’ vibe, but her chalky voice, makes it that much more appealing and less scary.

The Wooden Birds: “Believe In Love”: QUICK: Three things I think of when I hear this song: 1) Sitting on the steps of a fire escape on a rainy day 2) Seeing my breath when it’s really cold outside 3) A hot cup of coffee with lots of cream and sugar. Yup, that’s pretty much it. And prety much why I love this song.

Dr. Dog – Shame, Shame - It’s a ‘get up and get productive already, man’ kinda record. Really love it, too ’cause it’s the kind of record that you can listen to all the way through without changing songs because you like all of them. The most difficult thing about listening to it will be figuring out what song you want to hear first. Guarans. It’s already out, so I suggest you get that into your library as soon as possible. You don’t wanna be the loser friend that doesn’t have the new album, do you? That’s what I thought.

“Later”

“Mirror Mirror”

“Where’d All The Time Go”

“Stranger”

Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can – I’m at a loss for words. Ok, not really, but I’m jealous of a review I read on this album because I didn’t come up with it. But I was THINKING it! Does that count? “Laura Marling is just 20 years old, but unlike another singing 20-year-old (say, one with blonde ringlets, a sparkly acoustic guitar, and several Grammys), Marling doesn’t write about fairy tales and cute boys. Her stormy folk songs (which, on occasion, recall PJ Harvey’s) are primal and dark, crammed with ancient mythology and portentous warnings: “All of this can be broken / All of this can be broken / Hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to the ground,” she chants, offering up a vision of postadolescent womanhood that’s more about survival than escape.” So good, right?! Describes her perfectly. Here are some of my favorites by the more musically inclined side of 20-something-singer/songwriters. (PS – You may also remember that a while back, I posted you a song called “Devil’s Spoke” by miss Marling in my “Have You Heard” posting.)

“My Manic and I”

“Your Only Doll (Dora)”

“Night Terror”

“Alas I Cannot Swim”

“Old Stone”

High Places – “On Giving Up” – Tonight is going to be the night …. this track is just so good. I’m actually looking for a good remix of it, too. Not that it needs it, but I’m sure there will be a sick one out there at some point. I don’t know what else to say about this dark-dance song. It’s got a steady, serious flow and a covet-worthy chemistry with the guitars. I’m gonna go ahead and play this one again like three more times.

Gin Wigmore – “Oh My” – Her new album “Holy Smoke” just came out and lemme tell you somethin’ … I like this girl. She sounds like a more hard-core rebellious version of Duffy. Try:

The Low Anthem – “Apothecary Love” - They got a new album coming out very very soon, which they recorded whilst huddling around a piano, wrapped in warm blankets … that pretty much sets the mood for the record. I can’t wait. I appreciate this sort of music stripping. I mean, it’s an honest recording, with good intentions – to enjoy the singing of songs made and recorded organically.

Janelle Monae – “Tightrope” feat. Big Boi – If ya don’t know this girl yet, you bettah educate yourself cuz she’s changing ‘rock-n-roll’. Her image, sound and fresh footwork are coastin’ to TVs, radios and clubs near you. Can you do “the tightrope?” I can. No, I really can’t, actually. Watch the video for “Tightrope” … it premiered yesterday on MTV! Album drops in May, so be on the lookout for it!

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings – “I Learned The Hard Way” – Do you like Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings? Cuz I do. And I think you should learn the easy way about how great she is and press play.

Karen Elson – “The Ghost Who Walks” – So Jack White married a model (<—- Karen Elson) and surprise! She sings and writes music. But she’s pretty good. I mean, I trust Jack White, naw mean? Her album debuts May 25th (Jack produced it, of course). Here’s her title track: whachu think? (I’ll be honest, it’s not bad … I like her voice, but I hate her hair and make-up.)

Erykah Badu – “Window Seat” - I know I already posted this song waaaaaaaaaaaay back, but at that time the video hadn’t even been made yet. Well, now the video’s out and some are freaking out over it. Why all the buzz? Because she’s stripping nekked while passing the Texas Book Depository (the site of  JFK’s assassination) and then she is shot. What does it mean? Is it some sort of political stance she’s taking? Is it art? I think it’s the perfect visual expression for her personal take on humanity. Notice on her back it says “EVOLVING”. And pay attention to what she says at the end: I don’t think it’s controversial. I think it’s the perfect kind of ‘shocking’ that we need.

“They play it safe.
Are quick to assassinate what they don’t understand.
They move in packs.
Ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another.
They feel most comfortable in groups.
Less guilt to swallow.
They are us.
This is what we have become.
Afraid to respect the individual.
A single person with inner circumstance can move one to change,
To love our self.
To EVOLVE.”

Lissie – “Bad Romance” (Lady Gaga cover)“Everywhere I Go” & “In Sleep” – Lissie’s bad ass and so is this cover. Don’t underestimate her … she may look like a homely farmer girl, but she can rock and her voice will echo in your ears for days. She’s so emotional it’s like the visual inner-representation of a breakup or first time falling in love. Yeah, she’s THAT good.  She’s gonna take over the scene real quick … keep your pretty eyes on her. Below, listen to another of my favs by her called “Everywhere I Go”.  ps – on a REALLY morbid note, I want “Everywhere I Go” played at funeral. I hope someone remembers this. Oh yeah, and you’re gonna love “In Sleep” – hook for life.

“Bad Romance”

“Everywhere I Go”

“In Sleep”

Cypress Hill – “Armada Latina” feat. Marc Anthony & Pitbull – DAAAAAAANG!! Welcome back, Cypress! I missed you. This song reminds me of my hometown, Tucson, Arizona and cruising the South Side. I’m gonna go ahead and say that this is going to be an instant 2010 summer jam. It’s too good not to be.

Matt Pond – “Halloween” – This song had me at first guitar strum. And then with the strings and the piano sewn together in just the right places, I melted.

Marina and The Diamonds – “I Am Not A Robot” & “Obsessions” – <3 <3 <3 whoa! Lemme start out by saying: FANTASTIC stuff here. A teeny bit reminiscent of Regina Spektor.  She looks great painted in glittery black paint, has an incredibly unforgettable voice, great lyrics, awesome imagination – I love Marina from Marina and The Diamonds like I love Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Karen, I will always love you the mostest, though). Oh and who are the Diamonds, you ask? The Diamonds are me, you and everyone we know. Now, check out my two favorites while I go and bejewel my lips:

“I Am Not A Robot”

“Obsessions”

MGMT – Congratulations – Finally, the long-awaited release of MGMTs newest album is here. Seemed like forever, huh? OK, it’s definitely A LOT different than their last (Oracular Spectacular) but experimental and dancey still. I don’t think their likability went down, but definitely changed paths to possibly a different audience or at least influenced their current audience to expand their listening skills and invite others to join in on the fun. Some songs give me a 60s “Munsters” vibe, while others scream total freakbeats and bubblegum-goth.  What can I say? I’m a champion of this album. Like samps? Here are a few of the tracks …

“It’s Working”

“Congratulations”

“Flash Delirium”

“Brain Eno”

“Song For Dan Treacy”

Band of Horses – “Compliments” – I was looking forward to hearing this new song and man, when I finally did, I have to be honest … I listened to it four times in a row trying to figure out why I don’t like it very much at all. I finally figured it out. The song was great until the vocals came in. In my opinion, the harmony clashed. It annoyed me, if that makes any sense. I was used to the soothing side of their harmonies. You know, the ones that made you wanna cry every time. Not these. These make me want to quietly take off my headphones. I’m sorry, BOH, but compared to your previous musical tracks, this one does not make my list. I have to say, though, their other tracks are killer so far. Here’s to the good ones.

1. Factory
2. Compliments
3. Laredo
4. Blue Beard
5. On My Way Back Home
6. Infinite Arms
7. Dilly
8. Evening Kitchen
9. Older
10. For Annabelle
11. NW Apt.
12. Neighbor

apartment hunt[s]

•May 11, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Sometimes my head is just too full to be making playlists and such … it could be because of my metamorphosis into the realm of obsessive compulsion, having to put every song in a particular, even peculiar order … but the point is, I take forever to do it. So, if you’ve been one of the lucky ones to get a randomly made CD by me, then hats off to you. That means I really like you. I guess I’ve been absent for a while and it’s really only because I’m looking for an apartment. Yup, that’s right. My first apartment all to my damn self. That just means that all my time on the computer has been spent on the HUNT, but I have returned (took a break from my infatuation with $850 a month).

So, back to the playlisting thing: I didn’t make one for today. Nope. just gonna dip into my deep musical pockets (the only kinda deep pockets I’ll ever have, I’m sure) and gonna pick at random and play you my shuffled apartment hunting soundtrack – or at least a small portion of it. The day I find the apartment, I’ll letcha know what song was on. I’m sure it’ll have some sort of significance. Let’s hope it’s a happy song, yes? Or something electro. That’ll be fun.

“Let’s Get Bleeped Tonight” – Dada Life: – GUH, this song and this video are so good I don’t know which one I’d rather hear/see if I had to make a choice. Actually, yes I do. How could I miss the opportunity of this sick beat? It’sjustsogood.

“Heart it Races” – Dr. Dog: – Do I love The Architecture In Helsinki version? DUH. Who doesn’t? Do I like this one better? No. I love them both the same! Either way,  you can listen to a phenom song when you’re feeling chill or a little crazy. That’s always a good thing.

“Daylight” – Matt & Kim: THIS SONG MAKES ME HAPPY ALL THE TIME.

“Most wanted” – The Cults: – I can picture myself dancing with myself in my newbie kitchen by myself to this song.

“Promises” – The Morning Benders: – I’m a firm believe in The Morning Benders. Fell in love when I heard “Excuses” for the fist time last year and love love love their album. This song is my next absolute favorite!

“Sad Sad City” – Ghostland Observatory: – This is one of those that I jam to all the time, no matter where I am or what I’m doing. I will rock.

“No Sunlight” – Death Cab for Cutie: – I mainly just love the guitar and 60s vibe of this song … it makes me feel good inside … and like buying an ice cream and eating it on a big waffle cone, whilst sun bathing with giant sunglasses. or something of the sort. so cliche

“History” – Kleerup feat. Linda Sundblad: - Definitely 80s, no doubt. Sundblad’s voice reminds me of Amanda Perez. Yeah, remember her? Blast from the friggin’ past. The not too far past, anyhow. I’m a huge fan of Kleerup.

“Free Stress Test” – Professor Murder: – My typical reaction to this one when it comes up could be called a crazy hipster ragerface new wave swing.  hmmmmm what does that look like, exactly? EXACTLY.

“Hardcore days and Softcore Nights” – Aqueduct: – I’m hoping to be able to chill out in my phat living room or cool lanai (that’s a balcony) sippin’ iced tea and shmokin’. That would be great.

“The Call” – Regina Spektor: – I remember when I first heard this song, I honestly didn’t like it. So why did I decide to post it here, then? Because the strings pulled me in. If you’ve been reading my posts (whenever I get off my lazy ass and write) then you know how much I love strings in songs … strings make anything better.

“Alligator” – Tegan and Sara: – I just love T & S.

I Killed My Dinner With Karate

•May 21, 2010 • Leave a Comment
Artist: Bombay Bicycle Club
Song: “Evening/Morning”
Album: I Had The Blues, But I Shook Them Loose

Band from North London with a Maccabees kind of a feel. And I love the Maccabees so, for me, this band is a WINNER. Super catchy hook and the right brand of genre = lovey lovey love it!

Artist: Samantha Craine
Song: “Santa Fe”
Album: You (Understood)

A soft, folky, melancholy-without-the-tears, for-your-sweetheart-worthy, a-little-Feist-a-little-Ingrid-Burke with a lot of banjo tune that will probably love you as much as you love it.

“…And, babe, I know you know just ’cause I’m back on the road, it don’t mean your face don’t show in all my dreams, and I’ll be back for you … And babe, I know you see just how hard it is for me to unpack my clothes and shoes and stay right here with you, I don’t know how to …  “

Hellooooo, Miss Craine!

Artist: Kate Nash
Song: “Later On”
Album: My Best Friend is You

Yay for Kate Nash! She’s back and better than before, racy, funny, put-downs and all. I really love this song … it’s a bit more emotional for Nash, but even this one isn’t missing her witty, humorous presence. That’s what I love about her. She can sing the word ‘fuck’ with such a pretty voice and it’s one of those things in life that you just can’t not love.

Artist: Joanna Newsome
Song: “The Book of Right On”

“I killed my dinner with Karate  … And Even When you touch my face, you know your place” Though this song isn’t the newest thing you’ve heard all day, it’s going to be heard  a lot once you’ve heard The Roots newest album (soon to come out) … why? Because The Roots are cool as shit like that and like to sample other artists from different genres to open up their own musical pathways and school themselves a little while they’re at it. No, The Roots don’t only listen to “Black Rap Music” … THEY SOUL … THEY ROCK … THEY FUNKY … THEY JAZZY … and they can get folky, indie, electric, lovey dovey, emo, metal and gospelicious if they wanted to. And they got Joanna Newsome … sounds like a white indie version of Erykah Badu. And that’s not a bad thing. Not a bad thing at all.

Artist: Plants and Animals
Song: “Celebration”
Album: La La Land

I have a lot of interests, especially when it comes to songs. I like all kinds of songs. But certain things remain the same. Like, I love 70′s classic sounding music, or 60s psychedelic sounding pieces … I enjoy the folky Dylan types out there and the dancey Daft Punks along with the Jimis, Floyds and Joplins … Those are my defaults, I guess. Well, I found another … ya know … another  influenced by the defaults …  and I love this one, too. It’s perfect for a chill sesh.

A feeling of all that is blank … the empty abyss. It is a hard one to accept. Can it be understood or figured or broken and re-linked again? Can it be scared away or laughed off? No. It will stay and make a home within and become your best friend at times when you don’t feel like you need one. Or want one. Whether it’s a past or a present. Or something that only the future will hold, it will be there at some point. Love it. Because it’s the day that the feeling is gone, will be the day that you will direct yourself to the path of indifference. And nothing is worse than that.

“Be patient with all that is unresolved in your heart and learn to love the questions themselves.” -Rainer Maria Rilke <3

Listening to: “Round Again” by Astro

I’d like to take a vacation

•June 25, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Peter, Paul and Mary I have been gone for much too long and I apologize. I think the last time I logged in I was apartment hunting and I’ll have you all know that …. I still didn’t find an apartment. Boo hiss. But on a good note, now I have more time to tell you about all of the good I found. Well, honestly, not so good are ALL the songs, but ether way, I will share with you so you know what’s going on in the music world. Believe me, I know. I owe you many a post and many a post will you get. This one is the first =) Happy listening …

Robyn … OR, Holyshitwhatthefuckhappenedtorobyn?!

Robyn was a girl I used to know. Her voice could go from high to low. Her hair was cool and voice was good. But now she raps like them boys in the hood. Oh, Robyn, Robyn, where’d you go? I liked you much better in the 90s, yo.

THEN:

NOW:

Drake: “Find Your Love” on the album Thank Me Later

I’m going to come out with it: I love Drake. I think he’s cocky as shit, but he’s a great artist. Hopefully we won’t be dealing with another “Type-Kanye” personality, but as long as he keeps putting out good records, then who cares, right? This is a great song. Love it. I’ll leave it at that.As for the video, I’ll let you decide what the real message is.

The Young Veins: “Take A Vacation!” on the album Take A Vacation!

Remember Panic! At The Disco? Well, as you may or may not know, they broke up because of “differences” but the boys in the band (minus lead man) hooked up and put together their newbie group called The Young Veins. And maybe it was better that way, since clearly, they’re style is very different from that of Panic! Honestly, it’s nice and Beatlish with a sprinkle of Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, The Byrds … you get the idea. It’s good, though. If you don’t like that 60s vibe, though, then you probably won’t like The Young Veins. I’d still suggest that you give them a listen, though, so you know what’s out there at the moment.

White Crosses: “Bamboo Bones” on the album Against me

Alright, guys and gals, I’m going to get real honest with you right now. If you don’t agree, you don’t agree, but this is my blog and I’m going to tell you straight-up how I feel. I’m really not a fan of the White Crosses. I appreciate that they’ve been making music for quite some time now, but I just don’t feel it. I can’t get into it. It reminds me of a few bands out there that I really don’t care for (Shinedown). The music sounds outdated and old and not in a good way, along with the lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for teen angst chants and  non-conformist type lyrics, but this group just can’t do it. The songs don’t have any “POW!” to them and they’re easy to forget. Maybe you’ll think differently. Here’s their best one, in my opinion.

Kele Okereke: “Tenderoni” on the album The Boxer

And here we go! Bloc Party Bloc Party BLOC PARTY front man Kele Okereke has come out with his solo debut! His album The Boxer is now available and let me tell you something: INCREDIBLE. Am I saying this because I happen to love Bloc Party? No. I’m being honest. His album is amazing and dancey and fun and just as effective and cool as Bloc Party’s albums. Check out his new song below (video is cool too, btw) and lemme know what you think! And, no, this is not a cover song. Doi.

CocoRosie: “Lemonade”

OKAY these girls are crazy weird, but I’m all about them. I think they’re musical style is incredibly haunting and genius. They’ll put you under a spell for sure with musical sounds that will remind you of The Dirty Projectors, the Prohibition era, Basement Jaxx, the small creepy lady from Poltergeist, an Evanescence song and possible your grandmother. Weird, right? So many ways to describe. So many different types of songs. I would assume their likeability meter is either black or white. I don’t think there is any gray area here. Either you love ‘em or hate ‘em. I’m a lover. Also listen to  “Smokey Taboo”. It reminds me of “Stillness is The Move” by The Dirty Projectors.

Christina Aguilera: “Not Myself Tonight”

I was a fan and then I wasn’t and then I was, and then I wasn’t and now I’m a fan again. I really like the route she went with this album. It’s definitely a club song and I think it suits her. She’s got the voice for ballads, but the overall dirty appeal necessary for these songs and vids. I don’t mean this in a bad way, but lets face it, X-Tina is a dirty girl. She can’t help it. I’d rather have her do what she does best, then slip into genres that just don’t do it for her. Go ‘head, girl!

How To Destroy Angels: “The Space In Between”

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and his wifey Mariqueen Maandig and another band mate start a group. I hear this song and I’m reminded of Garbage or Sneaker Pimps or “The Craft”. Don’t act like you never saw the movie. we all did and we all loved it. I’m not swimming up a river and it’s not called ‘de-nile’.  And yes, for those of you who don’t know, you flow UP the Nile. I think the best part of the song is its abrupt ending. It sort of takes you in the trance, dances with you and then drops you when you lease expected it. Try:

Scissor Sisters: “Fire With Fire” and “Invisible Lights”on the album Night Watch

If you like the hot electronica beats and new wave shiny-spandex-acid-wash dance feel of the eighties, then you’ll definitely like Scissor Sisters. “Invisible Light” reminds me of one of my favorites by DJ Keoki “Smile”, what with the same sort of build up to a heavy based, happy ending. They got a great vibe going on and something fun to listen to at any point of the day. I’m very much into this type of musical genre, so I’m posting it for you in case you’re interested and decide to fall in the black whole like me =)

“Fire With Fire”

“Invisible Light”

Passion Pit: “Tonight Tonight” (Smashing Pumpkins cover)

Fact: I love Passion Pit. Loved them for a very long time. Still love them.

Fact: I love the Smashing Pumpkins. Well, not so much now, but yes, I love SP circa 1990s,  and Billy Corgan and all that jazz. Especially “Tonight Tonight”. It’s one of my favorite songs.

Fact: Passion Pit should not be covering this song. It’s just one of those things that they shouldn’t do. PP has a very unique sound that they craft their incredible music to, which is why their music IS so on point. The Pumpkins also have their own very unique sound that carried them this far. Point of this rant: DON’T FUCK WITH THE SOUND, MAN. Don’t cover something that just can’t be covered. I wouldn’t want to hear Ke$ha cover a Janis Joplin song, nor would I want Frank Sinatra to cover a Justin Timberlake joint. Er, maybe I would, but that’s besides the point. The cover is not flattering to Passion Pit at all and I’m disappointed that they would even try.

Lock the Door Behind You

•July 29, 2010 • 2 Comments

I’m not really in the “I’m-going-to-explain-to-you-why-these-picks-are-great” mood today. I wouldn’t call it laziness or lack of interest because BELIEVE ME if it has to do with music, I’m always interested. I think we’ve established a pretty trusting relationship here, in that you should know by now that I’m not too shabby with my musical pickens.

Anyway, within the last 5 seconds I just sort of changed my mind and I decided that if I feel like writing some comments about a song on this list, I will. If not, I won’t. It’ll be known as an unsystematic, random musical review. I won’t play favorites here, but I will most likely end up writing about every single song I decide to share with you.

Kanye West: “Power”

We all knew he’d make a comeback and let’s not pretend we are upset with this. So he interrupted a little speech and make Taylor Swift cry … AND??? Yeah yeah yeah, I get it, but he was right about Beyonce’s video and T. Swift wouldn’t be as famous as she is now for it. Is he an ass? Of course he is. And he’s not the best rapper in the world, but you know what? He’s got the X-factor that makes a song great. This one’s got the power vibe that “Jesus Walks” has … I guess he caught on to the popularity of chanting. Anyway, thanks to my Uncle Fred for sharing this one with me. He always knows what’s hot.

Miguel feat. J. Cole: “All I Want Is You”

It’s been a LONG while (for me) since I heard one of those hip hop/R&B songs that makes your insides crazy with soul. The time is here. I LOVE this song. I can’t get enough of it. Catchy hook, honest lyrics, HOT beats, HOT sample, HOT HOT HOT all around. Reminds me of round two of the good shit that would come out in ’97 and ’98 (you remember the good shit …) AnyWoo, Give this one a listen. I know you’ll like it. Oh, and big ups to Miguel, another successful LATINO in the industry! Best line: “All I want is you now that you’re gone ’cause being your friend is killing me softly. I hear voices, wonder where I went wrong, It was my fault and the wrong time, I wonder so often, regret gets exhausting …”

Usher feat. Pitbull: “DJ Got Us Falling In Love Again”

I was just having a conversation the other day about how hip-hop/rap/r&b has taken a wide turn into the dance genre. I guess it’s was a marriage bound to happen and you know, it works really well. You have more and more great artists collaborating together sampling hot dance tracks and creating an instant club/party hit. It’s not like electronica/dance DJs and hip-hop DJs are that far apart anyway. I mean, c’mon, two turntables and a mic = GOLD.

Birdman feat. Lil Wayne & Tyga: “Loyalty”

Typical Birdman with Weezy and Tyga. Nothing AMAZING, but ish good. Definitely a song that would be on your local hip-hop and R&B station. That’s about it.

Twista: “I Do”

WOW. Way to totally bite Luda, Twis. I’m not even a fan of this one. I just wanted to post it to remind everyone why it’s so lame to bite. It’s one thing to sample, It’s another thing to bite. Ew, you, Twis.

City and Colour: “Hello, I’m In Delaware”

Sometimes singers can get a little too whiny for me. It might be the insincerity that can’t be helped that mostly always comes through in the song, but I must say, this song definitely did not make my whiny singer-songwriter song list, which is good. I love this song, you know. I think it’s beautiful. It’s simple with emotional lyrics without being negatively and over-pathetically emo. I can appreciate the lyrics, too. Best line: “And she walks the night, how many hearts will die tonight? And will things have changed? I guess I’ll find out in seventeen days.”

Sia: “My Love”

Sia is an artist that I’d lump in with the likes of Bjork and such. She’s fantastically offbeat and romantic. Her voice is haunting and soft. “My Love” is another great addition to the soundtrack of the most annoying movie ever: Twilight. Not that I’m trying to tangent off on Twilight, but I’ll quickly admit … the soundtracks to the cult collective films are impressively brilliant, so don’t be surprised if you see me post more songs from the new soundtrack. There. Now, back to Sia: the thing that I tend to love most about her music is her ability to bring out the climactic point of every song.  It’s like she writes (musically) to a traditional story map for song; her musical elements of plot: 1) exposition, 2) rising action, 3) climax (this is usually where she has a big musical break with strings, drums, pianos, etc …), 4) falling action and 5) resolution. I’m serious! Listen and follow and try to pick out what is what. It’s beautiful and easy and I love that she does this.

Garrison Starr: “Sit With Me Tonight”

I don’t know how else to put this song. It’s simply stated, to the point, and romantic all at the same time. It has the same making as my so-called “slutty lunch”; quick, fast and easy. I love it! Best line? “Sometimes what you don’t say, makes all the difference.”

On Giving Up

•August 12, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I’ve been seeing a lot of um, “positive” posts lately on Twitter and Facebook … oh, you know what kind I mean. It’s like everywhere I look, I run into a damn inspirational quotes page. And you know, while everyone else is wiping the tears from their eyes and getting that wittle butterfry of enthusiasm and warm fuzziness in thier hearts, I have a paper vomit bag that will definitely get its time in the spotlight and eye rolls for days. I’m sorry, but somtimes I just want to say … ‘OH, SHUT THE FUCK UP’.

Would I call myself a negative person? Nah, not really. Negativity is for the birds, but honestly, I don’t buy the cheese that’s apparently been on sale for the past couple of weeks. It must be good if everyone is buying it, right? Or maybe it’s just that Mother Earth is runnin’ low on original, genuine people. It’s like we got a bunch of robots online now.

Listen, if you’re happy and feeling amazing, GOOD FOR YOU! Post it! Go ahead! But post it once for God’s sake or tun it into something funny or witty or smart or something worth reading. Because honestly, (and I mean HONESTLY) no one really cares about your happy fucking Monday, glorious fucking Tuesday, amazing fucking Wednesday, incredible fucking Thursday, fantastic fucking Friday, swell fucking Saturday and greatest most re-fuckin’-laxing Sunday. They just don’t. It’s ok to give up sometimes. This is is me giving up. Oh, and happy amazing fucking Wednesday.

Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra: “Kiss The Sky”

OK, GO!: “Maybe, This Time”

Lissie: “Pursuit of Happiness” (Kid Cudi cover) (BTW, I’ve been trying to get everyone you and I know to jump on the Lissie wagon. I’ve been at it since last year, man … she is THE SHIT and really does make me fuckin’ happy. Hello, REAL MUSIC!)

The Myrmidons: “Clap (See The Stars)”

Gift of Gab feat. Del The Funky Homosapien & Brother Ali: “Dreamin’” (FYI: These are the other set of undergrounders that have my heart)

Grand National: “Drink To Moving On”

Matthew Dear: “Soil To Seed”

Evangelicals: “Skeleton Man”

RJD2: “Ghostwriter”

Dan Black: “Cocoon” (PS – “Symphonies” should only be listened to by those who feel like it’s impossible to breathe when the one they love is so far away. Sweet, isn’t it? Yeah, I thought so, too.)

Rules: Shutyourface and listen to the songs.  If you listen just enough you’ll ‘preciate that the only thing in the world that some (like me) can count on now is hearing a song they (I) actually like and has some effect on them (me) whether they (I) want them to or not. It’s funny because some of the best additions have the shittiest memories attached to them. I guess that’s how life gets ya. These are some good ones I had forgotten about with their best lines!

Foals: “Electric Boom” – All I see is marching bands. Which never rest. In broken stance.

The Big Pink: “Sweet Dreams” – Tattoo your name across my heart.

These New Puritans: “Hologram” – Shut the door because I’m staying here.

Marina and The Diamonds: “Simplify” – Board games are underrated. I want a different life.

The Whitest Boy Alive: “All Ears” – I need it everyday. I blame it on you.

Delphic: “Doubt” – I found another face you showed.

The Drums: “Down By The Water” – If you fall asleep down by the water, baby, I’ll carry you all the way home.

White Lies: “From The Stars” – He sees how quick the water’s rising as another raindrop lands.

Mystery Jets: “Half In Love With Elizabeth” – And some things are too painful to say outloud.

Florence & The Machine: “Girl With One Eye” – I said, ‘Hey, girl with one eye, get yo filthy fingers out of my pie. I said, ‘Hey, girl with one eye, I’ll cut your little heart out ’cause you made me cry.’

Darwin Deez: “The Bomb Song” – None of the sunlight is safe.

Fenech Soler: “Lies” – How many times do you have to lie?

Two Door Cinema Club: “Something Good Can Work” – But you will always get what you want.

I once read this poem about the death of a dog. I don’t even know how to describe the way it made me feel. Hm, I guess horribly sad, yet sincerely empathetic? I knew what it was about. I knew those feelings and even though I hated to admit it, I also knew the frightening almost insensitive honesty that left nothing other than a tear in my eye and a shrug on my shoulders. The matter-of-factness of the piece was so uneventful that it took the triviality out of the entire scenario that was supposed to be; the dog’s unimaginable death and the man’s sinking grief.

But it was anything but that. It was more of a glimpse into the simplicity of purpose. We’re born with a purpose, we do what we have to do to find it, follow through with it and then we rest. The dog did it. And the man welcomed it with open arms and, for lack of a better word, love. His loss was not an embellished overstatement of loneliness; it was just seen as part of the cycle.

We welcome people in our lives, some leave, some stay. We deal with missing pieces differently and somehow manage to go on functioning without them. How do we celebrate those times or continually remember to collect the gems of a memory year after year? Loss isn’t easy, but maybe it’s not loss at all. Maybe it’s just misplacement. That way, there’s always hope that the ones that have gone before us can be found again.

“…Ai, I’ll not speak of sadness here on earth,
Of having lost a companion
Who was never servile.
His friendship for me, like that of a porcupine
Withholding its authority,
Was the friendship of a star, aloof,
With no more intimacy than was called for,
With no exaggeration …

… No, my dog used to gaze at me,
Paying me the attention I need,
The attention required
To make a vain person like me understand
That, being a dog, he was wasting time,
But, with those eyes much purer than mine,
He’d keep on gazing at me
With a look that reserved for me alone,
All his sweet and shaggy life,
Always near me, never troubling me,
And asking nothing.

…There are no good-byes for my dog who has died,
And we don’t now and never did lie to each other.

So now he’s gone and I buried him,
And that’s all there is to it.”

Life is a mother fucker.

But, why? Why is there so much hurt and pain involved in the process of living? Can’t life just give all of us a break once in a while? It’s hard enough trying to be as fluid as time and keep rolling along like everything and nothing has been moved. But that’s not how it is.

Everything was touched. Everything was moved. It’s all just a kaleidoscope of the paths we take. Sometimes we don’t know why certain paths are there and other times we think we do … but we don’t. Sometimes the patterns get really pretty and we’re so mesmerized by the things we discovered and the memories we’ve created that we lose our way and stray to another path, thinking it’s the one we’ve been on all along.

But we’re wrong. And we don’t notice it until we realize that certain colors and patterns are missing from our once immaculate kaleidoscope.

And what about the emptiness and the ability to remember everything? The scent of an old shirt you found hiding under the covers, a light wind carrying the aroma of familiar shampoo, the lingering molecules of the most beautiful perfume you’ve ever smelled …

Who would have thought our most reliable sense could be our greatest enemy? Who would have thought life could be so haunting and so unforgiving?

Our ears are even worse. Not only can they identify a composition by its first note, but when heard, they play the memory to the beauty that was once THAT moment in our color-shifting tunnel – the moment that was once the most  unforgettable moment we ever knew.

And that’s how the colors break into each other. It’s a continual motion that keep shifting and changing so that eventually, we are back to a moment we thought we had left behind. I guess it’s just left up to fate to decide on what color break the scope will slow to and finally …  stop.

Dammit! I have been in a major funk lately … ‘crazydreamslastnight’ kinda funk that gets glued to the side of your head so everyone can see. That’s just what happens when life throws the VOMIT at you, man.  But you know what? That stupid sign don’t mean shit. Nope. Not if you gotta good soundtrack goin’ on up there. Lucky for me, I did. A REAL good one. I built it slowly and carefully, not to mess up where I was going with it and I’m happy to say that today it avalanched out of me and is officially ready for listening. Enjoy yourselfff.

NOTE: So, apparently some people haven’t yet picked up that I write figuratively. If you must know, a “major funk” is usually a full mind. My full mind hapens to be full with work. Yes, ladies and gents, my job. When I describe it as as “crazydreamslastnight” kinda funk, well, that’s a descriptive term I sometimes use. No, I didn’t actually HAVE crazy dreams last night. And the VOMIT. In my language, the VOMIT is the randomness of life. I don’t mean it in a negative way at all. Well, that’s that. The songs on this blog are just to be shared. Good music that deserves to be heard. My little intros are just that: intros. Just something to spark a thought to match the music, perhaps. If you really want to know me, then this blog is not the way to do that. So, once again, enjoy the music.

Sleigh Bells – “Treats”

I don’t know a better word to describe this track other than EXPLOSIVE. It’s brilliant and I highly suggest spying the rest of the album. Get your hand on it somehow, someway. Please.

Hesta Prynn – “We Can Go Wrong”

I LOVE THIS BITCH. Next to Lissie, I can honestly say I love every single one of her tracks. Go scoop up all of her music right now. I swear, you will not be disappointed. Her material is ON POINT, my friend, and you will enjoy the ride. You can thank me laters.

The Naked and Famous – “Young Blood”

The thing that initially attracted me to this song was the “Sleepyhead” (Passion Pit) feel to it (vocally), though a tad more emotional. Doesn’t mean this song is sad, though. Not at all. Carefree if anything. Totally running-in-a-field-of-flowers-holding-a-pinwheel worthy. Definitely. Or driving with your friends. Either way …

MNDR – “I Go Away”

AKA “Amanda Warner” is not only hot but has a hot voice and hot songs. What more do you want? Oh yeah, she also knows the cool kids like Amanda Blank, Miike Snow and YACHT. If you don’t know who those people are, you have NOT been reading my blog. Check yourself and make things right.

Surfer Blood – “Swim”

A great summer anthem, no doubt. Luckily, I live in Hawaii so this little summer anthem is good all year long. My favorite thing about this song: the break at 1:16 … it reminds me of dancing in the drum circle on Venice Beach. Yeah, I’m THAT kinda gal. And proud of it.

Matthew Dear – “Slowdance”

I was listening to Matthew Dear a lot when I was in my ‘crazydreamslastnight’ zone. It gave me a way to focus on something other than my thoughts. INstead, I was able to concentrate on the great beats and various sounds creating such cool songs.

Neon Indian – “Sleep Paralyst”

Any Neon Indian song should always be on one’s default “Chill” mix tape or CD. PERIOD. It’s time to cool out …

Maximum Balloon – “Groove Me” feat. Theophilus London

Alright, let me fill you in on this kinda magic right here: Andrew Sitek from TV On The Radio took his musical genius and sought-after producing skills to another level with Maximum Balloon. He collected “his favorite voices in the world” like Holly Miranda, (“The Lesson” is actually my favorite song on the album, but I couldn’t find a video for it) Little Dragon, Katrina Ford, Theophilus London, David Byrne, etc. etc. ETC. and matched them with his electronic dance beats and winner song writings.  This is an album you need in your library. TRUST.

Apache Beat – “Another Day”

If there’s one thing I’m really a sucker for, besides everything else in life, it’s hearing the musical influence from another culture in a song. This is one of those songs. You can hear so many different instruments going at it. Is it too much? For some reason, this one doesn’t overwhelm me. Not at all.

Holy Ghost – “I Know, I Hear”

What can I say? It’s Holy Ghost. Holy Ghost anything is stellar. It’s such great night music. Night music is hard to come by sometimes. But you find something that makes you want to change out of your couch clothes and into those skinny jeans and make the hair straightener your BFF again, then you’ve struck gold.

Wavves – “Post Acid”

Bottom line: THIS SONG MAKES ME SO HAPPYYY! I like to jump around to it in my car, at my desk or at home. Outside is great, too. =D

Shit Robot – “Tuff Enuff”

I love that I can literally sit in the same spot bobbing my head whilst staring off in the distance for the entirety of this song. I really do.

Jenny Wilson – “The Wooden Chair”

She’s soulful and white all in one, while all the while funky and classic. How does that work? I guess you could relate her to Roisin on one level, but in whatever way you want you get familiar with her, she’s pretty great. I love her voice.

trashy, dirty, raunchy love

•October 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Have you ever honestly felt sheer lust for a song? Like when you’re out at a club, or getting ready at home with your best friend and all of a sudden that dirty remix of a song comes on that tweaks your body back in to that dark little space that sets fire to your insides and primes your mind for what will follow? Or maybe it takes you higher with that feeling of giddiness that would shame even the most naive of school girls. Or boys. Of course you have!  It’s that filthy good lovin’ coming from those speakers that bring you into that moment of inward (maybe outward) debauchery. That moment of hot, sweaty dancing, melted eyeliner, another pair of shots, and feeling more liberated than you’ve ever felt. Being under that musical influence never felt so good. Sometimes the right songs make the love to the right familiar feelings and it can change the night forever. Of course, with every intake comes a result. Be careful. The rhythm is gonna getcha. Here’s a few of my own dirties:

“Warp” The Bloody Beetroots feat. Steve Aoki (Virgin Cavalier Remix)

“Tick Tick Boom” The Hives (Kids At The Bar Remix)

Ellie Goulding “Starry Eyed” (Penguin Prison Remix)

“Tenderoni” Kele Okereke (Larry Tee & Beckwith Remix)

Empire Of The Sun “Standing On The Shore” (Dirty Disco Youth Remix)

Miike Snow “Sylvia” (Sebastian Ingrosso & Dirty South Remix)

“Walking On A Dream” Empire Of The Sun

“Ares” Bloc Party (Villains Remix)

“You & I” Medina (Deadmau5 Remix)

“Pursuit of Happiness” Kid Cudi (Steve Aoki Remix)

Before I Move Off

•October 15, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I found this song today and began to write. I was inspired by the scorching AZ summers and memories with my dearest friends.

Mount Kimbie: “Before I Move Off”

This air is hot.

Liquid hot.

It muffles our breath,

But the sounds of our laughter is too much for this heat.

I swear he’s laughing, too.

Lay with me in wonder,

On these hills, in this grass, on that porch,

Come drink with me,

And make this world right again.

Make me right again.

Repair my insides with your sweet nostalgic caress.

Feed me the dreams that only we spoke of.

Find me that better place of residual feelings,

Between us all,

When we were new and undeveloped.

Etch through the city, with this knife made of old scars,

New grooves of recollection,

And let me dance amongst them.

I will cheers to the ones before us,

That buried the poisons,

to save us some time,

and save some for later,

When time would decide.

‘Cause these fleeting moments are going,

And our minds are their only place of rest.

Remember to never forget.

The sun is baking what creation made her own,

And we are no longer alone.

We are young again with the weight of the world far off in some other place.

We are replenished,

Rummaging in plans that hang by a thread,

As there is always something else we could do.

Our eyes are fresh with sight,

Sparkling in this summer’s hot, white light

It burns us to the core, but at least we’ll search no more.

Your arms have produced the most comfortable arena

For these songs we yell through a continual giggle.

We never knew merriment until we met our first summer.

No existence of neglect.

No knowledge of regret.

Our bodies will call until we’ve managed every performance,

And we laugh,

And laugh,

And laugh some more,

Through melting windows of opportunity,

Unsaid crimes,

and naïve views of reality.

We are happy.

COOL/NEW/NOT-SO-NEW. MUSIC. WORTH. A. LISTEN.

Robyn: “Hang With Me”

WHY? Because “Konnichiwa Bitches”  just didn’t make the cut. Not even close. In fact, it was pretty much the shittiest song I ever heard. Best line from this one: “Just don’t fall recklessly, helplessly in love with me ’cause it’s gonna be a heartbreak, blissfully painful insanity.”

Samuel feat. Joell Ortiz: “I Heart NY”

WHY? Because I heart NY, too. <3

Spank Rock: “Tell Me What It Look Like” (Todd Edwards Remix)

WHY? Party jammer for sure. Love this remix.

Francis and The Lights: “Knees To The Floor”

WHY? Because it’s smooth. Different for what’s goin’ on with music right now and good. Best line: “You could try to talk me down/ Use every trick in the book/ But I won’t be coming back/ So get a good look…”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.: “Nothing But Our Love”

WHY? Because it makes me feel hopeful. Don’t ask me why. I’m really not sure.

Dominant Legs: “Clawing Out The Walls”

WHY? CAUSE IT’S SUCHAFUCKINCHILLJAMMER.

Deerhunter: “Helicopter” (Diplo & Lunice Remix)

WHY? Shit, man. If you don’t know why I’m posting this, you’re a failure. Anything Diplo is a win. You know this.

Kings of Leon: “Pyro”

WHY? Because this song reminds me of the self-destructive ones who destroy life’s true gifts: true love, true happiness, true fulfillment. It sucks knowing there are people out there killing themselves. But I do love this song.

S. Carey: “In The Stream”

WHY? It’s too pretty to let go of.

Wild Nothing: “Chinatown”

WHY? It’s a free-spirited song. Simple and fulfilling. Best line: “We’re not happy ’til we’re running away, clouds in your eyes…”

Tinashe: “Zambezi” (Fool’s Gold Remix)

WHY? Wow, because wow. The first time I heard it, all I could think of was drum circle dancing. I DIE.

Lia Ices: “Grown Unknown”

WHY? Because I love her hauntingly perfect voice and the progressiveness of this song, along with the added flavors and continual transitions to ever more powerful levels. Think FEIST “The Water” (vocally). GORGEOUS.

The Hundred In The Hands: “Love Sick (Once Again)”

WHY? Because it’s justa good feckin’ song, mate.

Small Black: “Photojournalist”

WHY? Because it sounds like Neon Indian, Memory Tapes and MGMT made The Love in a bed full of synthesizers.

Tamaryn: “Love Fade”

WHY? There’s something hauntingly familiar about this song that will leave you asking the question, ‘What song does this remind me of?’ only resulting in the playback button being hit a couple more times.

Fool’s Gold: “Nadine” (Rukus Roboticus Remix)

WHY? Because if you’ve heard the original, which I hope you have, then you’ll just appreciate how cool this remix is. Fool’s Gold is great, though, and I highly recommend (for the millionth time) getting your ears on their stuff.

Dom: “Living In America”

WHY? Because although I didn’t really like it the first moment it started, it soon developed into something similar to Passion Pit and/or Friendly Fires and I ended up kinda liking it. It’s so sexy … and weird.

Dominique Young Unique: “The World Is Mine”

WHY? Because I’m not sure how I feel about this song, yet. Whatcha thank? I like the cameos of Stevie Wonder’s “Part Time Lover”, but I’m not really sure about the song as a whole. Although, I AM sure that it’s going to be featured on some popular TV show very very soon. I kinda think it sucks.

How To Dress Well: “Ecstasy With Jojo”

WHY? Because it’s too trippy to not love. And I’m sure that’s exactly how it feels … With Jojo.

Quest For Fire: “Psychic Seasons”

WHY? Because it’s the perfect driving/chillout song. Especially if you live somewhere with snow-topped mountains. Just sayin’ …

Fake Problems: “Soulless”

WHY? ‘Cause it’s a happy jive.

Black Light Constellations

•November 18, 2010 • 1 Comment

Of Montreal: “Coquet Coquette”

This song is all about the lyrics. SO GOOD! Check it:  They’re the bell of the known-all-too-well love story of an unrequited love gone astray and a heart left with the vulnerable demise of its self will, picking up every so often, but then falling back into the dark abyss of capture. It’s about the good fight … the long fight with the humorous cliches and the jingles of the lock and keys, leaving you with an emptiness only death could understand and filling you to your highest capacity. Oh, Coquet Coquette!

My favorite parts: “Coquet Coquette, you know I won’t forget how you hurt me twice to prove you were cynical. My Coquet, you are the death you are the pinnacle. With you I can only see my black light constellations and all the shit I don’t think I have a language to say. I don’t want to catch you with some other guy’s face under your eyelids. Something must be wrong – you give me emotional artifacts that can find no purchase…”

No Age – “Glitter”

It’s a song of mess, loss and wanting. What’s better: my mess, your mess, their mess. (Metaphorically speaking, of course).  It doesn’t really make sense and the parts that do, or should, are fleeting. But, it’s just how it should be. It gives off the right feelings of liberation, even melancholy zoning and sadness on just the right drum counts. It’s entrancing, really – a combination of the dread of reality cushioned by what one might define as being hopeful. Nonetheless, it’s about the chase in the race to find out how long you can hold on in order to really hear it. Can you hear it? I can.

Best line: “When they take my turn to get a win, everyone is out to get you again, but I want you back underneath my skin”

Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.: “Bang Bang Bang” (feat. Q-Tip and MNDR)

Hello, some of my favorite funsters! It’s exciting that all musicians don’t give in to the trend of the masses and that they still explore what their musical roots were planted for in the first place. I’ll cheers to that any day. Is this song incredible? No way. But it’s experimental and different, so I can appreciate that.

Adele: “Rollin’ In The Deep”

The soul’s siren of a mistress is back and picking the questioned wounds she healed in her album prior. Her already strong exhalations of a voice is more powerful and reaching new heights in this one. She rekindles the emotions that were left standing in “Best For Last” and “Chasing Pavements” and really hashes out what the response is. It’s about acceptance and the breaking hurt that comes with it. It’s asking “Why?” and thinking about “what could have been”. It’s beautiful, really,  with the bed of a southern haunt.

A smidgen of my favorite lyrics: “The scars of your love remind me of us. They keep me thinking that we almost had it all. The scars of your love, they leave me breathless. I can’t help feeling we could have had it all, rollin’ in the deep. You had my heart inside of your hand and you played it to the beat…”

Interpol: “Lights”

Where do I start? It’s brilliant, for lack of a better word. The way this song finesses you into progression with effortless transitions spares you some time to actually hear that vocal poetry behind the magic. And the guitars … oh the guitars and those drums bringing what we always thought a dark mystery might sound like – maybe even something sad and frightening. It’s just beautiful, really, all things emotional at their best. It’s a cry for help. That’s why I love it.

Lyric sesh: “All that I see, show me your ways. Teach me to meet my desires with some grace. All that I fear, don’t turn away and leave me to plead in this hole of a place what if I never break? Estuary won’t you take me far away, far away? All that I seek, please police me. I want you to police me, but keep it clean…”

Deerhunter: “Revival”

There’s a special life design I picture when I hear this song, filled with the kitsch and the concrete objects inside those honeycomb pockets in our mind- the vanguard of memories, captured in an ounce of time. Maybe it’s the feeling of flying I get. Maybe it’s the floaty “ooohs” and “ahhhhhs”. Who knows.

Best line: “Well, I am saved, I am saved and could you believe it? You won’t regret if you choose to believe it…”

Sufjan Stevens: “Futile Devices”

This short fraction of what love feels like is too much to contain in just this song, but is just enough. It’s just how it’s supposed to be … fleeting. What a perfect construction between the comfort and uneasiness … you can even feel the tension building of what might be love’s unsettling moments and the beauty underlying the change to comfort. It is what is made to be felt more than heard. The emotional definition of love in two minutes and twenty seconds. Just enough time to relive the moments of your life where love filled your body. It’s the perfect soundtrack for the vignettes that flash before you when you dream at night about those little things that mattered all along and forever.

Key lyrics: “It’s been a long, long time since I memorized your face. It’s been four hours now since I wandered through your place and when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe and when you bring the blankets, I cover up my face. I do love you. I do love you…It’s hard, so I won’t say it at all and I won’t stay very long, but you are the life I needed all along.”

Weezer: “Memories”

Dude. It’s fucken Weezer. Throw me the line of function that takes me back to the good days with my friends. Pile them on me like sugar on the flakes and let ‘em melt in my head like my favorite twin pops from the corner store in summer. Nostalgia never felt so good! Doesn’t hurt to add in the boys from jackass either.

Mr. Little Jeans: “Rescue Song” (RAC Remix)

The tendency to smoke (Marlboro or Marleys) and bob your head to the music is pretty much what I picture/do/imagine on this one. Oh, and let’s not forget the brew. Is this song even sad or happy or angry? I have no idea. The sound of the soft, overlapping, yet vanishing vocals are enough to create one’s own story to this beat.  So sing whatever you think the words are … sometimes it’s more fun that way.

Women: “Eyesore”

I’m huge fan of the nostalgic ability that bands like The Morning Benders or The Drums have on me so, naturally, I have fallen in love again with “Eyesore” by Women. The chill of the echoey vocals and the strike of those few notes that the guitar begs for you to take in and remember are what make the song emotional, perhaps? Like watching a difficult ending of an old black and white movie or saying goodbye and leaving with promises for more to come, but never knowing when. It’ll pull you in and leave you hoping that it’s not ending … not just yet. You’ll want to hear it again, as you think to yourself: “Damn. I really liked that one.”

Skream feat. Sam Frank: “Where You Belong”

Clean, dubstep transitioning as smoothly as the technological voices maneuvering through those seamless, silky beats. You don’t need to do much to appreciate this one, except drink it when it pours into you. You’ll melt all over it.

Best line: “How can I feel good about this life I’m living when you’re not here right beside me, right here where you should be?”

The Tallest Man On Earth: “The Dreamer”

Right off the bat, this song takes you in completely with the deep simplicities of the love between voice and instrument. Me thinks no marriage has ever been better. The continuation and slow progression of additional instruments makes those quick insertions of sound more exciting.

Shmall kine lyrics sesh: “It’s just enough dark to see, how you’re the light over me.”
