It’s about the good fight … the long fight with the humorous cliches and the jingles of the lock and keys, leaving you with an emptiness only death could understand and filling you to your highest capacity. Oh, Coquet Coquette!

My favorite parts: “Coquet Coquette, you know I won’t forget how you hurt me twice to prove you were cynical. My Coquet, you are the death you are the pinnacle. With you I can only see my black light constellations and all the shit I don’t think I have a language to say. I don’t want to catch you with some other guy’s face under your eyelids. Something must be wrong – you give me emotional artifacts that can find no purchase…”

No Age – “Glitter”

It’s a song of mess, loss and wanting. What’s better: my mess, your mess, their mess. (Metaphorically speaking, of course).  It doesn’t really make sense and the parts that do, or should, are fleeting. But, it’s just how it should be. It gives off the right feelings of liberation, even melancholy zoning and sadness on just the right drum counts. It’s entrancing, really – a combination of the dread of reality cushioned by what one might define as being hopeful. Nonetheless, it’s about the chase in the race to find out how long you can hold on in order to really hear it. Can you hear it? I can.

Best line: “When they take my turn to get a win, everyone is out to get you again, but I want you back underneath my skin”

Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.: “Bang Bang Bang” (feat. Q-Tip and MNDR)

Hello, some of my favorite funsters! It’s exciting that all musicians don’t give in to the trend of the masses and that they still explore what their musical roots were planted for in the first place. I’ll cheers to that any day. Is this song incredible? No way. But it’s experimental and different, so I can appreciate that.

Adele: “Rollin’ In The Deep”

The soul’s siren of a mistress is back and picking the questioned wounds she healed in her album prior. Her already strong exhalations of a voice is more powerful and reaching new heights in this one. She rekindles the emotions that were left standing in “Best For Last” and “Chasing Pavements” and really hashes out what the response is. It’s about acceptance and the breaking hurt that comes with it. It’s asking “Why?” and thinking about “what could have been”. It’s beautiful, really,  with the bed of a southern haunt.

A smidgen of my favorite lyrics: “The scars of your love remind me of us. They keep me thinking that we almost had it all. The scars of your love, they leave me breathless. I can’t help feeling we could have had it all, rollin’ in the deep. You had my heart inside of your hand and you played it to the beat…”

Interpol: “Lights”

Where do I start? It’s brilliant, for lack of a better word. The way this song finesses you into progression with effortless transitions spares you some time to actually hear that vocal poetry behind the magic. And the guitars … oh the guitars and those drums bringing what we always thought a dark mystery might sound like – maybe even something sad and frightening. It’s just beautiful, really, all things emotional at their best. It’s a cry for help. That’s why I love it.

Lyric sesh: “All that I see, show me your ways. Teach me to meet my desires with some grace. All that I fear, don’t turn away and leave me to plead in this hole of a place what if I never break? Estuary won’t you take me far away, far away? All that I seek, please police me. I want you to police me, but keep it clean…”

Deerhunter: “Revival”

There’s a special life design I picture when I hear this song, filled with the kitsch and the concrete objects inside those honeycomb pockets in our mind- the vanguard of memories, captured in an ounce of time. Maybe it’s the feeling of flying I get. Maybe it’s the floaty “ooohs” and “ahhhhhs”. Who knows.

Best line: “Well, I am saved, I am saved and could you believe it? You won’t regret if you choose to believe it…”

Sufjan Stevens: “Futile Devices”

This short fraction of what love feels like is too much to contain in just this song, but is just enough. It’s just how it’s supposed to be … fleeting. What a perfect construction between the comfort and uneasiness … you can even feel the tension building of what might be love’s unsettling moments and the beauty underlying the change to comfort. It is what is made to be felt more than heard. The emotional definition of love in two minutes and twenty seconds. Just enough time to relive the moments of your life where love filled your body. It’s the perfect soundtrack for the vignettes that flash before you when you dream at night about those little things that mattered all along and forever.

Key lyrics: “It’s been a long, long time since I memorized your face. It’s been four hours now since I wandered through your place and when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe and when you bring the blankets, I cover up my face. I do love you. Weezer: “Memories”

Dude. It’s fucken Weezer. Throw me the line of function that takes me back to the good days with my friends. Pile them on me like sugar on the flakes and let ‘em melt in my head like my favorite twin pops from the corner store in summer. Nostalgia never felt so good! Doesn’t hurt to add in the boys from jackass either.

Mr. Little Jeans: “Rescue Song” (RAC Remix)

The tendency to smoke (Marlboro or Marleys) and bob your head to the music is pretty much what I picture/do/imagine on this one. Oh, and let’s not forget the brew. Is this song even sad or happy or angry? I have no idea. The sound of the soft, overlapping, yet vanishing vocals are enough to create one’s own story to this beat.  So sing whatever you think the words are … sometimes it’s more fun that way.

Women: “Eyesore”

I’m huge fan of the nostalgic ability that bands like The Morning Benders or The Drums have on me so, naturally, I have fallen in love again with “Eyesore” by Women. The chill of the echoey vocals and the strike of those few notes that the guitar begs for you to take in and remember are what make the song emotional, perhaps? Like watching a difficult ending of an old black and white movie or saying goodbye and leaving with promises for more to come, but never knowing when. It’ll pull you in and leave you hoping that it’s not ending … not just yet. You’ll want to hear it again, as you think to yourself: “Damn. I really liked that one.”

Skream feat. Sam Frank: “Where You Belong”

Clean, dubstep transitioning as smoothly as the technological voices maneuvering through those seamless, silky beats. You don’t need to do much to appreciate this one, except drink it when it pours into you. You’ll melt all over it.

Best line: “How can I feel good about this life I’m living when you’re not here right beside me, right here where you should be?”

The Tallest Man On Earth: “The Dreamer”

Right off the bat, this song takes you in completely with the deep simplicities of the love between voice and instrument. Me thinks no marriage has ever been better. The continuation and slow progression of additional instruments makes those quick insertions of sound more exciting.

Shmall kine lyrics sesh: “It’s just enough dark to see, how you’re the light over me.”

Robyn: “Hang With Me”

WHY? Because “Konnichiwa Bitches”  just didn’t make the cut. Not even close. In fact, it was pretty much the shittiest song I ever heard. Best line from this one: “Just don’t fall recklessly, helplessly in love with me ’cause it’s gonna be a heartbreak, blissfully painful insanity.”

Samuel feat. Joell Ortiz: “I Heart NY”

WHY? Because I heart NY, too. <3

WHY? Party jammer for sure. Love this remix.

WHY? Because this song reminds me of the self-destructive ones who destroy life’s true gifts: true love, true happiness, true fulfillment. It sucks knowing there are people out there killing themselves. But I do love this song.

WHY? It’s too pretty to let go of.

Wild Nothing: “Chinatown”

WHY? It’s a free-spirited song. Simple and fulfilling. Best line: “We’re not happy ’til we’re running away, clouds in your eyes…”

WHY? Wow, because wow. The first time I heard it, all I could think of was drum circle dancing. I DIE.

Lia Ices: “Grown Unknown”

WHY? Because I love her hauntingly perfect voice and the progressiveness of this song, along with the added flavors and continual transitions to ever more powerful levels. Think FEIST “The Water” (vocally). GORGEOUS.

The Hundred In The Hands: “Love Sick (Once Again)”

WHY? Because it’s justa good feckin’ song, mate.

Small Black: “Photojournalist”

WHY? Because it sounds like Neon Indian, Memory Tapes and MGMT made The Love in a bed full of synthesizers.

Tamaryn: “Love Fade”

WHY? There’s something hauntingly familiar about this song that will leave you asking the question, ‘What song does this remind me of?’ only resulting in the playback button being hit a couple more times.

Fool’s Gold: “Nadine” (Rukus Roboticus Remix)

WHY? Because if you’ve heard the original, which I hope you have, then you’ll just appreciate how cool this remix is. Fool’s Gold is great, though, and I highly recommend (for the millionth time) getting your ears on their stuff.

Dom: “Living In America”

WHY? Because although I didn’t really like it the first moment it started, it soon developed into something similar to Passion Pit and/or Friendly Fires and I ended up kinda liking it. It’s so sexy … and weird.

Dominique Young Unique: “The World Is Mine”

WHY? Because I’m not sure how I feel about this song, yet. Whatcha thank? I like the cameos of Stevie Wonder’s “Part Time Lover”, but I’m not really sure about the song as a whole. Although, I AM sure that it’s going to be featured on some popular TV show very very soon. I kinda think it sucks.

How To Dress Well: “Ecstasy With Jojo”

WHY? Because it’s too trippy to not love. And I’m sure that’s exactly how it feels … With Jojo.

Quest For Fire: “Psychic Seasons”

WHY? Because it’s the perfect driving/chillout song. Especially if you live somewhere with snow-topped mountains. Just sayin’ …

Have you ever honestly felt sheer lust for a song? Like when you’re out at a club, or getting ready at home with your best friend and all of a sudden that dirty remix of a song comes on that tweaks your body back in to that dark little space that sets fire to your insides and primes your mind for what will follow? Or maybe it takes you higher with that feeling of giddiness that would shame even the most naive of school girls. Or boys. Of course you have!  It’s that filthy good lovin’ coming from those speakers that bring you into that moment of inward (maybe outward) debauchery. That moment of hot, sweaty dancing, melted eyeliner, another pair of shots, and feeling more liberated than you’ve ever felt. Being under that musical influence never felt so good. Sometimes the right songs make the love to the right familiar feelings and it can change the night forever. Of course, with every intake comes a result. Be careful. The rhythm is gonna getcha. The thing that initially attracted me to this song was the “Sleepyhead” (Passion Pit) feel to it (vocally), though a tad more emotional. Doesn’t mean this song is sad, though. Not at all. Carefree if anything. Totally running-in-a-field-of-flowers-holding-a-pinwheel worthy. Definitely. Or driving with your friends. Either way …

MNDR – “I Go Away”

AKA “Amanda Warner” is not only hot but has a hot voice and hot songs. What more do you want? Oh yeah, she also knows the cool kids like Amanda Blank, Miike Snow and YACHT. If you don’t know who those people are, you have NOT been reading my blog. Check yourself and make things right.

Surfer Blood – “Swim”

A great summer anthem, no doubt. Luckily, I live in Hawaii so this little summer anthem is good all year long. My favorite thing about this song: the break at 1:16 … it reminds me of dancing in the drum circle on Venice Beach. Yeah, I’m THAT kinda gal. And proud of it.

Matthew Dear – “Slowdance”

I was listening to Matthew Dear a lot when I was in my ‘crazydreamslastnight’ zone. It gave me a way to focus on something other than my thoughts. INstead, I was able to concentrate on the great beats and various sounds creating such cool songs.

Neon Indian – “Sleep Paralyst”

Maximum Balloon – “Groove Me” feat. Theophilus London

Alright, let me fill you in on this kinda magic right here: Andrew Sitek from TV On The Radio took his musical genius and sought-after producing skills to another level with Maximum Balloon. He collected “his favorite voices in the world” like Holly Miranda, (“The Lesson” is actually my favorite song on the album, but I couldn’t find a video for it) Little Dragon, Katrina Ford, Theophilus London, David Byrne, etc. etc. ETC. and matched them with his electronic dance beats and winner song writings.  This is an album you need in your library. TRUST.

Apache Beat – “Another Day”

If there’s one thing I’m really a sucker for, besides everything else in life, it’s hearing the musical influence from another culture in a song. This is one of those songs. You can hear so many different instruments going at it. Is it too much? For some reason, this one doesn’t overwhelm me. Not at all.

Holy Ghost – “I Know, I Hear”

What can I say? It’s Holy Ghost. Holy Ghost anything is stellar. It’s such great night music. Night music is hard to come by sometimes. But you find something that makes you want to change out of your couch clothes and into those skinny jeans and make the hair straightener your BFF again, then you’ve struck gold.

Wavves – “Post Acid”

Bottom line: THIS SONG MAKES ME SO HAPPYYY! I like to jump around to it in my car, at my desk or at home. Outside is great, too. =D

Shit Robot – “Tuff Enuff”

I love that I can literally sit in the same spot bobbing my head whilst staring off in the distance for the entirety of this song. I really do.

Jenny Wilson – “The Wooden Chair”

She’s soulful and white all in one, while all the while funky and classic. How does that work? I guess you could relate her to Roisin on one level, but in whatever way you want you get familiar with her, she’s pretty great. I love her voice.

But, why? Why is there so much hurt and pain involved in the process of living? Can’t life just give all of us a break once in a while? It’s hard enough trying to be as fluid as time and keep rolling along like everything and nothing has been moved. But that’s not how it is.

Everything was touched. Everything was moved. It’s all just a kaleidoscope of the paths we take. Sometimes we don’t know why certain paths are there and other times we think we do … but we don’t. Sometimes the patterns get really pretty and we’re so mesmerized by the things we discovered and the memories we’ve created that we lose our way and stray to another path, thinking it’s the one we’ve been on all along.

But we’re wrong. And we don’t notice it until we realize that certain colors and patterns are missing from our once immaculate kaleidoscope.

And what about the emptiness and the ability to remember everything? The scent of an old shirt you found hiding under the covers, a light wind carrying the aroma of familiar shampoo, the lingering molecules of the most beautiful perfume you’ve ever smelled …

Who would have thought our most reliable sense could be our greatest enemy? Who would have thought life could be so haunting and so unforgiving?

Our ears are even worse. Not only can they identify a composition by its first note, but when heard, they play the memory to the beauty that was once THAT moment in our color-shifting tunnel – the moment that was once the most  unforgettable moment we ever knew.

And that’s how the colors break into each other. It’s a continual motion that keep shifting and changing so that eventually, we are back to a moment we thought we had left behind. I guess it’s just left up to fate to decide on what color break the scope will slow to and finally …  stop.

But it was anything but that. It was more of a glimpse into the simplicity of purpose. We’re born with a purpose, we do what we have to do to find it, follow through with it and then we rest. The dog did it. And the man welcomed it with open arms and, for lack of a better word, love. His loss was not an embellished overstatement of loneliness; it was just seen as part of the cycle.

We welcome people in our lives, some leave, some stay. We deal with missing pieces differently and somehow manage to go on functioning without them. How do we celebrate those times or continually remember to collect the gems of a memory year after year? Loss isn’t easy, but maybe it’s not loss at all. Maybe it’s just misplacement. That way, there’s always hope that the ones that have gone before us can be found again.
